“great family resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2014

This was our first trip to Winnetu and we loved it! Great rooms, beach, biking and the resort is really well set-up for kids of all ages (ours are 8 and 10). Our favorites were the life size chess board, drinks/dinner on the balcony and the kayak trip. Hope to return yearly.

I want to be fair to the Winnetu in that they are pretty clear on their website that they are a family-oriented resort, which means families with children, and we were a family of adults with older parents - not quite the profile the resort excels at serving. You can read the various other raves here about the kids programs and services. For us it was disappointing to have every amenity (pools, ping pong table, etc.) occupied with children all the time. It's kind of like vacationing in a very expensive Romper Room.

We stayed in one of the townhouses managed by the resort, across the road and not on the grounds proper. These are nice if somewhat ageing units a short drive or long-ish walk from the main resort building and the activity center. The second and third bedrooms were set up with hard twin beds for children; the only large bed was in the master.

The quality and amenities of these units apparently varies as they are independently owned, and we were disappointed that our unit did not have any beach chairs to take to the beach - we were told we could rent a pair for $25 a day from the resort. I've stayed at many vacation rentals in Hawaii that provide beach chairs, towels, boogie boards, etc. without having to ask or pay extra.

Also the unit had a big ant problem that necessitated having the exterminator come out twice to mitigate. I get that there will be bugs when you're in a house in the woods, but this was a known infestation, and we felt they should have been more proactive about resolving it. We woke up with ants crawling on us, which was not very vacation-like!

As a swimmer, some additional notes: South Beach is lovely for walking along but pretty rough for swimming. I had a better swim at State Beach near Oak Bluffs. Neither of the resort pools are suitable for lap swimming; they're not big enough or marked, and generally there are children and family playing in them.

The gym facility was great, and open late hours; it's at the Activity center, which was fine for us but maybe a bit far if you're staying at the main resort.

We had dinner at Lure, the onsite restaurant, once. The food was good, but not worth the very high prices ($38 entrees). The caliber of service was okay but not what you'd expect at that price point. We found this to be true on other island restaurants as well.

Morning Yoga on the lawn was lovely - very accessible teacher for all levels. We really enjoyed this.

We used the shuttle service to Edgartown a number of times; very handy, the drivers were all terrific. During the day it runs only once an hour (more frequent in the evening).

In summary - I'm giving this a 4-star rating despite a lot of negative feedback, because I think we should have done a bit more homework and found a more suitable accommodation for our needs. We did encounter a few service problems at Winnetu, but overall the place is, I think, as promised on their website, and clearly other travelers with children find it a fantastic place. If you don't have kids or don't want to be around them I'd recommend considering other options when looking at staying on the Vineyard.

Room Tip: For townhouses be sure to ask what amenities are provided with the home

This was our second visit to the Winnetu. We love this resort! So much to do with kids. You can head to South beach ( a short walk), catch frogs and turtles in the pond, ride your bike to Katama Airfield for a delicious breakfast and watch a biplane take off and land! Only 3 miles from Edgartown for nice shopping and great restaurants! Accommodations are beach inspired and very clean. We stayed in the Chilmark unit which was a great set up for 3 kids!
Pool is very nice and the grounds are beautiful with lovely flowers!
Clam bake was really fun and is highly recommended!
Staff is friendly and helpful. This is truly a special place!

Great family resort. Plenty to do for the kids. Extremely relaxing. Walking distance to the beach. Restaurant on premises. If you did not want to, there would be no reason you would have to leave the resort. Bed was very comfortable.

Room Tip: We had a ground level suite which was great for the kids coming and going. Small kitchenette had eve...

The staff at The Winnetu are remarkable. It's a great property and very well kept up, despite the challenges of being near the ocean on Martha's Vineyard. Walk to the beach (South Beach)...great restaurant for dinner (Lure) and tremendous amounts of activities to choose. A big shout out to Lizzie Pack (Front Office Manager) and Tim Benoit (Concierge) who are some of the most informative, helpful, and nice people we've met. Get to Tim in advance and your stay will be packed with activities, restaurants, etc. etc. Mark Snider, the owner, is there making sure all the guests are happy...very special place!!

We LOVED our stay at this resort. We are couple who came without the kids to get away for a break for 6 days. We stayed in one of the garden studios--"Little Tashmoo". Even with lots of families and kids around--"Little Tashmoo" was really private and quiet! It was roomy, clean as a whistle and beautiful. The kitchenette with fridge, sink and microwave was great. Loved the private deck filled with flowers.

The employees are all so lovely and very quick to accommodate. The place is absolutely gorgeous. The walk to the beach is enchanting. (Some might consider it a long walk--I'd say about 5 minutes, not an issue for us.) South beach is beyond heavenly--we spent several days from morning until night there. The heated pool was fabulous. Everything we needed was right there: all our meals if we wanted. It is very pricey for us (we work in the arts) but worth every penny.

Our suggestions for the suggestion box: They can use more employees in the general store to alleviate the waits at breakfast and lunchtimes. Larger ice cream cones (ours were minuscule!) For the most part, the food was great, but the baked goods were sub-par. Next to the private back outdoor deck in "Little Tashmoo" was a hidden maintenance area, so sometimes a vehicle and employee had to drive right past our patio to access it.

We LOVED the fact that we could enjoy the facilities before check-in and after check-out!!! This allowed us to enjoy our stay to the absolute fullest. We had to take a 6am ferry in and a 5pm ferry out, so we had a long time before check-in and after check-out to enjoy the beach and the pool. SUCH A GREAT PERK!!

Overall, a perfect vacation spot.

We are not the "resort" going type, and I have only been to a handful of resorts my entire life. We were also traveling with our very uncooperative 13mo daughter. She was in a new place and everything from food to transportation to sleep turned out to be a big deal for us.

1- Food: This was our biggest problem. There aren't many dining options on the grounds. No room service. The general store has breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu from 7am - 11:00pm, but all options do not necessarily work for a little eater, and it gets boring to repeat everyday. The poolside grill has additional options, but they only run from 11:30-3:00. The restaurant opens at 5:30, which does not work if your child starts getting sleepy at 6 and goes to bed at 7. Make sure to plan ahead for FOOD!

2- Staff: Super friendly. The owner is always there greeting newcomers, asking where they are visiting from. They did anything possible to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable.

3- Walk to the best beach on the island. The beach is a short walk away from the resort. Super convenient.

4- Yoga: Complimentary yoga classes everyday except Sunday. I went to one class and the instructor was great!

5- Fire truck ride: Older kids and adults seemed to enjoy it. A retired firefighter actually runs the show which is really cool.

6- Shuttle service: Convenient shuttle service to Edgartown, ferry station, and Stop and Shop (beware- the S&S may not have everything you need, but is sufficient). Drivers are all helpful and friendly.

7- Hotel website and reservation: I was not fully satisfied with the hotel website. I think they have lots of things to offer that are not clear on the website. I made the reservation via phone because I wanted the garden studio for 2 adults and a baby, but I was not able to do that online. After the reservation was complete I received an email from the reservation office saying the Pack n Play for the baby is an extra $40. Compared to the price for the room $40 was nothing, but it was a turn off. Don't judge based on the website and reservation process, this place is great!

8- Cleanliness and design: A+. Our room was beautiful, clean and comfy. We had a little patio facing a foot road and a wall, which was OK. I just wished he patio edge was a little more secure because of the baby, but it was OK. When she went to sleep at night, we would sit on the rocking chairs in the patio to talk. We had a squeaky bathroom door, which I kept forgetting to mention to the front desk, and occasionally we would hear our neighbors, but it was not an issue for us (we live in a condo on a busy street). The landscape was beautiful. Flowers everywhere around the courtyard, pool and grille. There is also a huge lawn area between the hotel and beach path which was very relaxing and attractive. The lobby is not grand, but sufficient. Overall, I think the design was very well thought and sufficient.

9- Indoor activities: Not many options. We were lucky that we had good weather during our stay.

Bottom line: this is a great family resort, especially with older kids. I think we might go again when our daughter is older and more cooperative, because it is too costly to go and not be able to enjoy everything they offer.
