We stayed at the Ashley Inn, Edgartown MA for almost a week in October 2006.

The accomodations were terrific; the cleanliness was surperb.

Upon our arrival we were delighted with frest flowers adorning a table or two.

Fred and Janet Hurley are delightful and certainly went out of their way to make sure all our needs were met..

The homemade breakfasts served each morning were simply
delicious and presented with class.

We are looking forward to another week in October 2007.

“Spacious connecting ground floor rooms were very convenient”

Our visit to the Ashley Inn was a pleasant and quiet stay at the end of a busy 7 state Fall Foliage Tour. I was escorting 3 senior ladies and we were very pleased with our accommodations and the box of chocolates that was waiting our arrival. Fred was great in accommodating us on ground floor connecting rooms. We also enjoyed having our own private entrances. We stayed 2 nights and appreciated the historic feel of our rooms which were cleaned daily. The bathrooms had been upgraded with all the toiletries that we needed.
We felt welcomed and comfortable as we relaxed in the beautifully decorated home that included plenty of reading material about Edgartown and Martha’s Vineyard. Each afternoon we were treated to freshly baked cookies and breads with our tea.
Our breakfasts were excellent and to our surprise we were given a couple of choices unlike other B & B’s.
Fred took the time to give us detailed suggestions for places to visit and restaurants.
A couple of things that I would add to the room with the kitchen would be a few essential dishes and silverware. We enjoyed Edgartown’s location and quaintness.

“vintage charm, great location”

Just returned from our stay at the Ashely Inn.
All in all, an extremely enjoyable stay. The owner, Fred was extremely helpful, and full of advice, readily offering tips for our two days at the Vineyard.
The room that we paid about $200 for was really pretty- vintage and homey- with prints on the wall, some cozy comfy arm chairs by the window and a super-comfy bed. the bathroom, done in a sunshine yellow color was spotlessly clean with a decent size tub and nice toiletries. liked the fact that there were two tvs- one in the sitting area and one in the bedroom so me and my husband could do our own thing ( if we wanted).. think we perhaps had one of the nicer rooms but could be wrong.
enjoyed the homemade breakfast ( included in the room rate) which changed everyday- piping hot, fresh good quality coffee. breakfast could be taken in the patio or in fred and janets' wall papered, sunshine filled morning room-where tables were laid out with real linen (not paper napkins) and beautiful floral china that seemed to have been passed down.
plenty of books and papers in the living room plus some couches if you wanted to relax.
yes, the bed sheet had hole in it and the furnishings are older and worn- but if you want perfection dont come to a bed and breakfast - stay at a regular impersonal hotel. to the reviewers who complained about the smell- i know what you mean, but what is is a just an "old house lived in" smell- nothing nasty or difficult to bear. as for the prices- i suppose that is more a reflection of the place- martha's vineyard is pricey and thats simply the going rate!
we had housekeeping everyday to keep the room tidy, and plenty of offers to help from the staff. the free internet was convenient. the location too was excellent, not too far from the main street to walk- yet not close enough to give it a commercial feel. edgartown is definitely preferable to oak bluffs or vineyard haven for its charm.
we shall certainly look at returning in the future..
some suggestions- would like softer towels, perhaps some robes, bigger/newer TVs. we missed out on the chocolates and fresh flowers in room, as well as the afternoon tea as mentioned on the website. no hint of either of those..

“Impersonal hotel, disguised as a homy B&B”

The Ashley Inn is an expensive hotel with at best average service that is disguised as a B&B. I am rating this B&B in comparison to some other B&B's we stayed at on the Cape and on Nantucket.
The inn keepers do not welcome their guests or at least introduce themselves. Check-in and breakfast were handled by students. The friendly atmosphere so common to B&B's in this corner of the world does not exist. No fruit basket or water in the room, no dinner recommendations, no "do you need beach towels", ...

The room was over-priced at 265/night. Nobody mentioned to us that the windows are not at the normal level but that you actually have to drop on your knees if you want to look outside. The bathroom was old and the curtain-rail of the bathtub rusty. On top of that, they completely forgot to make the room. When we pointed that out, no applogy was offered.

My wife and I spent 3 nights at Ashley Inn. From check-in to check-out, we were greeted by friendly, helpful staff (Fred, Kate, and Sarah among others) who provided us with conversation, recommendations, and filling breakfasts and scrumptous afternoon snacks. The room (#7) had a king size bed, TV, phone, and full size bathroom. Our stay was enjoyable from start to finish in Edgartown. It was also a pleasure to return to Ashley Inn from our mini-excursions around the island, as we were always greeted with questions of our adventures and future plans. The small inconveniences were; the mattress was very firm, the TV was very small, though we didn't go there to watch TV, and I was led to believe there was wireless Internet connection. There was a shared internet connected computer for use in the Inn. But, as my wife would add, We weren't there to go online anyway. I would recommend a stay at Ashley Inn. Perhaps the negative reviews are referring to other rooms, but our room was comfortable and relaxing for us.
