“Comfy and delicious at the Victorian Inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2006

We just got back from staying at the Victorian Inn during our first trip to Edgartown. It was early in the season so not many travelers on the streets and some stores were not open yet. We felt like we had the place to ourselves and everyone was still very relaxed. We had fantastic weather and loved our cozy room on the second floor at the front of the building. There were five large windows looking out on the street such that we felt we were in a treehouse but we could close the shutters and draw the heavy drapes when we wanted privacy. Llovely antiques fill the inn and we had the feeling we were visiting our rich, old Colonial Dame aunt. Everything was spotless and the innkeeper, Stephen, was very warm and professional. He's a good storyteller and full of island lore. His wife made us spectacular breakfasts, the raspberry butter is not to be missed! Our bed was very comfortable with great pillows and extra blankets for the cool nights. There is no television, so if you are a Red Sox fan you have to listen on the radio in the room or hightail it up to David Ryan's about a block away for a seat at the bar to watch the game. We read each night while we sipped the brandy(?) thoughtfully provided by the hosts in our room. On nice days, guests can sit in a little courtyard behind the inn to read or just enjoy the birds. You can't beat this place for it's location in the heart of Edgartown and just a block off the harbor. The surrounding neighborhood is full of classic early colonial homes with sweet little gardens and many wonderful architectural details. A very nice walking and swimming beach is located 15 minutes by foot north of the inn and it's easy to get around on buses. Yes, we paid a pretty penny for our room but it was worth it. I would recommend The Victorian Inn for couples without kids who just want to slow down, relax and reconnect.

This was PEFECT! I went with my husband for our 14th anniversary. He had arranged to have a flowers, wine, and cheese all pre-delivred to our room upon arrival. He said the hotel was MORE then helpful. The staff was great. Steve gave us a 30min "Drive around and see all of the Island in 1 day" map which we followed to the T. Couldn't have done it without him. Do note that this is a B&B set in Victorian era, so the furnishings reflect this. I find it lovely. Old world with all the modern. Note-no elevator!!

The Victorian Inn in Edgartown is a wonderful, quaint B&B in Marrtha's Vineyard. The rooms were beautiful and there are fresh flowers everywhere. The breakfasts are delicious and are part of the experience. There's no T.V. in the rooms or parlor, so don't expect to catch any favorite shows during your stay at the B&B. The staff is very friendly and helpful, especially the owners, Steve and Karen. We went during the off season and there is not a lot to do in Martha's Vineyard during this time of year, but there are a few shops and restaurants still open. The island is quiet during the off-season, although a lot of the seasonal activities are shut down during the off-seasonI advise to bring a few good books to keep yourself entertained in case of rain or a laptop as the rooms are internet accessible, I believe. I highly recommend this place for a quiet get-away.

My husband and I stayed at the Victorian Inn for a weekend in July. The inn is located on a quiet side street in the heart of Edgartown, within walking distance from shops, restaurants, and the water. The location is perfect.
Our room was spacious, clean, and beautiful, with two small balconies, which provided a partially obstructed view of the Edgartown harbor. The room was very airy and light, with Victorian decor that was tasteful and refined, without a hint of being overdone or stuffy.
Breakfast was served in a lovely flower-filled backyard patio, with excellent, attentive service.
The inn is very expensive (385 per night for our 3rd floor, partial-harbor view room), but this is expected in Edgartown.
Our only complaint is about the innkeeper (I believe his name was Steve). In contrast to his wife, who was professional, friendly and attentive, Steve was rather intrusive and rude. During breakfast, he stopped at each table to chat and greet guests, which was nice. However, personally, I felt that he stayed at each table too long and was overly intrusive. We would have preferred more privacy to allow us to have a romantic breakfast for two. In addition, he was quite rude to us when we had a few friends stop in our room for a few minutes. We were at the Vineyard with several friends, who were staying elsewhere. In the evening, we invited them up to sit on our private balcony for a few minutes, as I got ready for dinner. Steve's response was to yell at us while standing on the stairs for having more than 2 people in the room and then make a rude, sarcastic remark as we left for dinner. He acted as though we were teenagers sneaking people in to party. This certainly was not the professional treatment we expected at a $400 per night fine hotel. If you are traveling with a group of people or with children, this is not the hotel for you.
Despite Steve's personality faults, the inn was quite lovely and I do not regret our decision to stay there. However, we will likely stay elsewhere during any future visits to the island.

My husband and I enjoyed our weekend stay at the Vic very much. Caryn and her husband are very nice and hospitable, made us feel at home while we were there. Its a wonderful large victorian house (would have loved to have gotten a tour - its so big!). While our room was small, its was cozy with soft linens, nice bathroom and shower and big bay window that overlooked the street. The breakfasts were delish, lemon poppy waffles with fresh blueberries and grapefruit and muffins. Its a great location - walking distance to all the shops, restaurants and harbor...no need for car. Its right next to a bike rental place - we rented bikes and had a ball going to Oak Bluffs State Park beach, Katama, and South Beach.

Would stay again but in a King room next time! :-)

The inn is ideally located, just steps away from shops, restaurants, and Edgartown harbour.

The inn has a lovely outdoor patio with beautiful landscaping where decadent and leisurely breakfasts are served. We enjoyed the afternoon tea, fresh lemonade and homemade cookies after a day of sightseeing. The innkeepers include other thoughtful touches like complimentary sherry and fresh flowers in every room.

We stayed in a small room with twin beds on the main floor. It was right beside the breakfast room and seemed to be very close to the kitchen. We were warned the location could be a bit noisy, and certainly found this to be true. Guests would be better off requesting an upper-level room. The view from our bay window was of the house next door, and, as such, there was little natural light. Together with the furnishings this produced a somewhat gloomy effect – particular to this room only, I’m sure. The bathroom was quite modern and comfortable.

The Victorian Inn is well worth visiting, just be sure to book the right room.
