“Beautiful refuge/preserve/beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

A beautiful island, especially in the off season. Magnificent East Beach at Cape Poge Refuge, tranquil My Toi gardens, Poucha Pond Reservation - beautiful walks and vistas and an air of peacefulness abound. (Scratch the peacefulness during the season . . . . ) Wasque Reservation and Norton Point are experiencing coastal erosion (and reshaping), the ocean currents are shifting and sculpting the shoreline. While the changes are distressing, the process itself is fascinating. See Trustees of Reservation website for up-to-date information. Bike or car; bring food, beverages, and other personal needs; restrooms at Cape Poge are seasonal, restrooms (portable toilets) available year-round at My Toi.

“Never changes accept beach erosion”

Lovely place to visit. Beautiful beaches, nice houses to walk by. Definitely worth the short ferry ride. Will go again.

“Beautiful place.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2012

Beautiful and quiet place in off season. Love the beaches here, especially around the Wasque area. Easy to reach via the three car ferry. But, as another person mentions, summer will bring long waits for the ferry. Worth the trip over, though. Bring your own supplies.

“Lovely little island with an interesting history.”

The "On Time" ferry is pretty funny. Had a beautiful day biking over there. Really nice since there are not many cars. Short ride but worth it.

“Beauty is where you find it.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

Chappy is an island, and is very distant in style and density from Edgartown proper.

The quait "On Time" car and passenger ferry take residents and vistors back and forth.

Jeffries Chappy Store is only commercial establishment on the island and it is only open in the Summer. Good for a newspaper, a quart of milk and eggs, and soft drinks and sandwiches. It is located at the former Chappy Garage, a pretty unattractive landing place for junker cars and trucks. One day the owners will see that they can do more business if they get rid of the junkers and clean the place up.

Wasque is at the South Eastern point of the island, and used to be one of the great beaches at Martha's Vineyard. Hurricanes Irene and Sandy have ravaged the shoreline and most of the Wasque beaches are now gone.

East beach is just past the infamous bridge that was replaced 7-8 years ago. It is now safe, and no cars have plunged over into the Cape Pogue waters in recent years, and the East beach is one of the best beaches remaining at MV. Never crowded.

One used to be able to drive an off road 4-wd vehicle over the sand dunes from the Wasque area a couple of miles to Katama village, south Edgartown. In a storm four or five years ago, a breach occurred in the sand dunes, ultimately becoming over 100 yeards wide. The breach is closing and moving further East to Wasque. Over the past 100 years this has occurred four or five times.

Chappy Beach Club, a private swimming and sunning club, has served Chappy and Edgartown families for nearly a hundred years. The colorful cabana roofs are a visual icon for boaters approaching Edgartown harbor.

Chappy Community Center is just that for both year round residents and summer home owners and renters as well. Lots of programs ... tennis, sailing, crafts, book club etc. This is a jewel built and supported by contributed funds from island locals and seasonal members.

Chappy is very quiet, not so populated for such a large island, and most from Edgartown have only seldomly or ever crossed over to the other side with the three minute ferry ride ... a fact much appreciated by Chappy residents.
