I ate at The Marshside two weeks ago on a Thursday with my family (party of five). It recently underwent massive renovations, but has the same owners going back years. We sat in a line of six cars to be valeted, and I went in and put our name on the list. We were gestured to sit in the lobby area, but not given a wait time. Forty-five minutes later my dad checked on the wait and was told "about another 45 minutes," and we were sat about an hour later. An hour and forty-five minute wait is not unheard of on the Cape in the summer, but not telling someone that when they put their name in? Rude. Anyway, overall the food was great, but a super limited menu with small portions for the price (I had chowder - thin and lukewarm, and swordfish tips - delicious! - with mashed potatoes - like cardboard). The service was terrible. A food runner delivered our food and then no one came back to our table until twenty minutes later when we finally flagged down a busgirl to bring butter. Even when the waitress saw us flag the other girl and saw her bring us something, she still did not approach the table to check on us or offer refills on drinks.
So... that brings us to tonight. It's a Monday night, but it's summer on Cape Cod and any other middle of the road restaurant with decent seating serves at least until 10:30 pm, sometimes later. My husband and I arrive at 8:30 pm and the valets in the parking lot tell us to park wherever because they are done valeting for the night (we park in one of only two empty spots). Pretty great sign! We assume no wait. We park and go inside, and no one is in the foyer or on the expansive wrap-around deck (compared to the last visit when at least 75 people were waiting). Another great sign! We again assume no wait. I get to the hostess stand and the woman says apologetically, "Sorry... we aren't able to serve you... we have a wait and aren't taking any more reservations." NOT a great sign! I was stunned. A) Why did the valets not pass on this message in the parking lot to newly arriving patrons? B) Where are all the waiting people? C) You don't seat after 9:00 pm? On Cape Cod? With your huge new restaurant? D) Have you no staff? E) Do you intend to alienate customers? And as we leave, at least five other parties are walking up to the door or parking their cars. Poor fools.
In closing, do not go eat at The Marshside Restaurant. At least not this summer. It will be a huge waste of your time and money. Maybe next year they'll hire enough staff, train them properly to do their jobs, and be able to serve as many customers as every other establishment of their size and (theoretically) caliber.
