“Best Buy! Central Location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 16, 2011

My two teenage kids and a friend and myself stayed at this fantastic location on our recent trip to Boston/Salem Mass. The location is very close to Salem, just up the street actually, many malls, restaurants etc. It is also about a 20 min drive to downtown Boston. The location is very quiet, off the beaten path and the accommodations were amazing. We stayed in a 2BR that had a full kitchen and living area. The only downside was that there was only 1 bathroom, but we survived as we were out most of the time anyways. It was nice to have the full kitchen as it gave you the opportunity to cook a quick dinner as opposed to eating out all the time. They have what they call a grab and go breakfast which is included in the price, this is just muffins, cereal, oatmeal, coffee, tea, juice and fresh fruit. We just bought a loaf of bread and some eggs to compliment our breakfast. The staff at the front dest was so friendly with directions and helping us chose which attractions were best suited for all of us. The room was kept very clean and I had absolutely no complaints whatsoever. The cleaning staff was also very accommodating with us, making sure we had enough towels everyday for everyone's shower. The beach we chose to go to was Winger Shaek beach, the drive was about 25 min from the hotel, and the parking was 20 dollars, but you don't have a choice, there is no where else to park. the beach is clean and you can walk out very far in the water and it doesn't get deep, that is if you can stand the cold of the Atlantic. Back to the hotel though, I can't say enough about the staff there, always with a smile, always willing to answer questions and they always asked us how are day was when we came back from an excursion. The price was amazing as well, if you are going to stay for a week or more, it is very inexpensive. They supply all the cleaning supplies as well, I've been to suites before where if the soap runs out to wash the dishes, you are on your own, but this place was once again, very accommodating. The lobby is full of brochures to help you pick out the best places to go as well, we would recommend the trolley tour in Boston, the freedom trail in boston, Mikes bakery in Boston (buddy has competition!) the JFK museum and of course, Cheers. In Salem, we did the witch museum, the peabody essex museum and the house of seven gables. We also took the salem ferry to boston, it's a one hour ride that there is actually a tour guide on. It also serves alcoholic beverages and hot food with a place to eat inside, hey it kills the time. We went whale watching in Gloucester, which is about a 25 min drive from the hotel at Bill's whale watching, amazing time! It was a 5 hour trip I think because the water was choppy, but we saw about 30-40 whales, amazing time. Just remember to bring a jacket, and rubber sole shoes, and take a gravol if you get sick easily. All in all we had a fantastic time and are already planning our trip back there next summer.

We stayed here almost a week in July and made it our home base for day trips to Boston, Salem, Gloucester, etc. I hesitated about making the reservation because of some of the past reviews, but we found it suited our needs very well. The price was excellent considering the room came with a full kitchen. The hotel was very clean and quiet considering its proximity to 2 major roads. There were a lot of guests with pets but all were leashed and we did not hear one "bark" the whole time. The location is a little tricky to find as mentioned in past reviews. Approaching from the east you have to go past the hotel because of a median and do a u-turn and come back. Also the entrance to the hotel is not on Andover Street (as the address would lead you to believe) but is off Victoria Drive (just off Andover). Approaching the hotel watch for the yellow fire hydrant - Victoria is right before it - if you go past don't get confused by the next turn which is an access ramp onto a highway. The pool is very small and right outside the lobby and we did not try their free breakfast because of the kitchen in our room we made our own. We were very happy with our stay and would go back. The one problem we had was that when we checked in we were told they would be happy to steer us to good local restaurants. The one they did recommend to us had terrible food and was completely the opposite of what we explained we wanted.

Room Tip: 2 buildings - ask for the one without the main lobby - quieter

Stayed there July 5-8, while doing some sightseeing and shopping. The hotel was clean and well-maintained. They advised us on check-in that there was a problem with hot water but they were looking into it; they ended up replacing the boiler but it was up and running again within a couple of hours.

Continental breakfast was ok, coffee was good and always ready.

Staff was very helpful in answering questions about the area and giving directions.

Was somewhat reluctant about what we were expecting after reading some of the other reviews but was really surprised at how nice this property was for the $$$ spent. Everything was neat, clean, and orderly. The housekeeping was excellent. We'd leave the room for the day and come back to find towels/washclothsreplaced, beds made, dishes placed in the dishwasher and cleaned, etc. The beds and shower were great. The only utensil missing from the kitchen was a good can opener. The two negatives about this hotel is the skimpy continental breakfast and the access to and from from the highway. Once you learn the route it's not too bad. Would stay here again!

My husband was going to run the Boston Marathon, but we didn't want to pay the outrageous prices for a downtown hotel. The price of this place fit out budget and we felt it was a good value. The front desk staff was extremely helpful and went out of their way on multiple occasions. The bed was comfortable and pillows good. The room was a comfortable size and it was nice to have the small kitchen. While the room was clean, housekeeping was pretty inconsistent. One day we would have three bath towels, the next day two. One day we'd have a kitchen towel and dish rag and the next day neither. One day we'd have two bars of soap in our bathroom, and the next day none. The shower was great, but the bathroom fan was definitely noisy. When we booked the room, we had requested a quiet room. Unfortunately, the reservation desk never put a note on the reservation and we ended up with a room along Highway 1 which was noisy. I will not rely on the reservation people again and will be sure to make the request when arriving at the hotel. All in all it was a good place to stay for the price and would stay here again.

this is a low end Marriott property but was clean and adequately appointed w/ kitchenette. staff was fine and worked to find a quiet room w/o us asking. a little pricey for the place but it was October in Salem...the witches were out and rooms are scarce.

Stayed for an extended visit in July/August. Overall, we had an okay stay, but the hotel could make some improvements. The hotel area is mostly quiet, except for some road noise for the entrance ramp to Route 1. Hard to find at first, but convenient to highways/North Shore/Boston. Turn in the shopping plaza just past the Chili's Restaurant - it's almost behind it. We enjoyed having the small kitchen with an oven and refrigerator. They kept promising that flat screens were soon to be in the rooms, but none arrived while we were there.

Continental breakfast is located on cart in office. Provided cereal, yogurt, bananas, apples (galas were always good, red delicious always seemed to be brown inside), and muffins (the blue label ones were better than the Sara Lee). Liked having milk cartons. Wish they had continued to provide the little orange juice bottles. Easier to carry carton and bottles to room and use for a day or two instead of having to go down daily for a glassful. The outdoor gas grill by the pool was handy to use – grill utensils were available in the office. The small outdoor pool was heated. Closed a little early at 9 PM. Sometimes it was very crowded with people that arrived in cars that didn’t seem to be hotel guests. Should require a key card to access. Workout room was small (2 treadmills and an elliptical), but not usually busy - they provide headphones at the front desk for the machines. Health Club was a short walk away and they offered monthly memberships for $10. Did not really have a business center, just a free-standing computer available in main office that was often out of ink or paper. Free internet from room using Ibahn, but you have re-activate each day.

Popular with pet owners, but pet policy is not clearly stated. Some people must think the $75 fee covers cleaning up after their pet as they took no responsibility. The management should have every pet owner sign a document that says they will always clean up after their pet or face eviction. The hotel has a pet area with scoopers and bags, but I was still amazed by the pet waste in the parking lot and in the grass area leading to stores behind hotel. When we encountered some in the stairway and by the elevator, the staff was quick to clean it up and even steam cleaned the area.

The knowledge and helpfulness of the front office staff varied greatly. The men were very helpful and sought answers if they didn’t have them. Louise, on the other hand, knew nothing, would not even attempt to help you and appeared extremely lazy. The cleaning staff varied too - Lucy was a bit too snappy! They seemed to run out of clean towels often and did not like to give out extra towels. Unclear as to whether they recycle – blue garbage can in kitchen with recycling symbol on it, but watched cleaning staff dump our empty water bottles into the regular trash. They kept the main entry areas mostly clean. When something like cereal spilled, it stayed in the stairwells nearly a week unless pointed out to staff. It is a small enough hotel for staff to walk daily to make sure everything stays in order.

The no-smoking policy should be posted everywhere including in all the rooms. We were on an upper floor and for a period someone below us liked to smoke every night. The smell would come up through the bathroom vent and wake us up. The front desk offered to move us, but we liked our location and did not want to move all our stuff. Wish they would have contacted the offender to stop smoking rather than just take note for the manager. Hotel needs an immediate way to enforce No Smoking Policy that will not inconvenience other guests. People always seemed to be smoking under the cover by the doorways – wish smoking wasn’t allowed immediately outside the door.

Not a bad place to stay, but the management could work to make it so much better!
