My husband and I spent one lovely night at the Chatham Bars Inn over Columbus Day weekend. We're Cape regulars- my parents have a house here, so we don't normally stay in hotels in the area. However, this time we were looking for way to unwind in comfort while our little guy stayed with my folks.
We felt the resort totally delivered. The main inn's gorgeous public areas and huge veranda with sweeping views of the Atlantic made a great first impression. It was a cold, damp evening and the fireplace in the huge (yet inviting) lounge was a perfect antidote. I loved the details in that room, for example the adorable and elegant children's sitting area.
We stayed in the Hunting Lodge, which had dark wood paneling and fantastic hunting-themed details in the public areas (which included a huge lounge just for those staying in the lodge- a great and unexpected feature). Since it was a rainy night, the warm and inviting decor was perfect (although I’m not sure how I'd feel about that in summer).
Our standard room was modest in size but very comfortable. The bathroom in particular had some great touches, e.g. a heat vent in case you're chilly getting out of the nice bug tub. The simple decor was fitting for Cape Cod.
We had dinner in the tavern. The food was a little hit or miss (great lobster rolls, not so great roast chicken breast), as was the service- we won’t go running back there. We really enjoyed the buffet breakfast at STARS, however, with it’s beautiful setting, water views and very good food with plenty of choice (FYI, there's also an a la carte menu). Expensive for breakfast but worth the splurge.
We didn't take advantage of any other amenities (including the pool, which surprisingly was still open and looked lovely), so I can't comment on those.
We would definitely return to the Chatham Bars Inn for a luxurious and low-key off-season escape. I know summer is a totally difference experience, with more families, a full calendar of activities and events, etc. and astronomical prices to match.
