“Much more than dim sum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2011

Most reviews concentrate on this as a place to go for dim sum, but we have found their regular menu to be fabulous. It is very comprehensive, and they are willing to customize based on special requests and serve inventions that are not even on the large menu. The food is delivered at a nice, hot temperature too. This place is a real gem.

“Delicious Dim Sum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2011

This is the best place to go for dim sum in the DC area. Hollywood East consistently has a large variety of dim sum options, including all the standard dishes as well as some more creative ones. In my experience, the service has always been good, which I cannot say for many dim sum places I have been to. I recommend going earlier in the day on weekends to ensure having the most options to choose from.

“Hollywood East is a GREAT Hong Kong-style restaurant!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2011

I've had dim sum in lots of Washington-area restaurants, in Hong Kong, New York, Los Angeles & parts south, Boston and anywhere else in 36 countries where I thought it might be good. We've been to Hollywood East for dim sum or dinner every week for years. The weekend opening at 10:00 is an hour earlier than anyplace else, and the dumpling cart rolls immediately with towers of steamer cans. The kitchen starts producing fried items in about 30 minutes, the specials in about 45 minutes. Today the fried items included taro dumplings with a savory meat filling, juicy oysters deep fried in a light batter, and "turnip cake" with or without XO sauce. Specials included bbq chicken, bbq pork, clams in black bean sauce, baby bok choy stir fried with garlic, steamed broccoli with oyster sauce, Szechuan green beans with ginger and pickled vegetable, and beef chow foon. All the dim sum is made in-house by a specialist cook. Hot food gets served hot, unlike at some places. Mrs. Yu runs the kitchen with a sure hand, while cruising the dining room often to add a touch here or there. Mr. Yu has the support staff on their toes -- it's rare to see a water glass half-empty, a teapot with its lid open hoping for a fill-up. Their kids are serving, and half the others call her their mom, and they all care about the family business.
If you DON'T come for dim sum, their menu is a delight. The appetizers and chef's specials lists are as long as your arm, the stir-fried standards are all there and well-done. The menu then gets even stronger with noodle and casserole dishes that are to swoon for, rice plates and roasted meats to comfort anybody.
Parking? It's in a shopping mall! If you can't find space in the covered lot in front of their door on the "restaurant row" because its full of shoppers, try anywhere around the mall and walk through to the mall interior entrance.

“We're hopelessly addicted”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2010

This place just gets better and better. We've been huge fans since before the big move to Wheaton Mall. The food is spectacular (especially when it's right out of the oven); the service is warm and professional. It's by far the best dim sum we've found in the area.
