While traveling to NYC for business, I decided to spend the first night at the Conrad hotel in the Battery Park area of Manhattan. Conrad's are owned by Hilton and most of their hotels are in Europe and Asia; I think that there are only four or five in the US.
This NYC Conrad used to be an embassy suites years ago and I remembered staying there with my kids when they were younger. I knew that the hotel had a smartphone app for "concierge service" and I was excited to try it out for my stay. So, while en route in a taxi from Penn Station, I confirmed my arrival time for check in. The app would also allow you to order room service and other amenities. I decided to request a shoe shine for my next work day.
The entry to the hotel is facing the waterfront and has a large, office building look/feel that leads to escalators to go up to the main lobby. On the street level, a bellman was walking a couple out of the street as I exited my cab, but he ignored me completely. I thought it was obvious that I was arriving to check-in and expected some form of greeting or at least direction to the front desk. Nothing from him.
Check in was brisk; less than two minutes. Excellent. My room was on the 9th floor and was fantastic. A somewhat smallish 1BR suite, but with great looking furniture, control panel buttons for lights, lamps, etc., a large desk area, two flat screen tvs, a bar area with sink, a large walk-in shower stall, large comfortable bed, lots of closet space. Really a nice room that you could spend a week in without getting uncomfortable. My one complaint is that the despite the various lighting options throughout, the room was never really brightened. Very low wattage bulbs in use, I think.
I had a drink on their rooftop bar. Very nice and a good staff. Had it not been cool and breezy that evening, I would have stayed longer. I ate dinner in the restaurant bar. A very good wine selection, but I had a disappointingly over-cooked pizza; I could only eat half of it and as I had a large salad, was not left too hungry. However, I did decide not to have breakfast there the next morning because of the pizza error.
I planned to check out the gym the next morning, but had to leave earlier than I thought for work. Even though I used the app for the shoe shine service, there was never an acknowledgment. So, I just called to schedule the shoe shine and someone came within 10 minutes and returned the shoes within 45 minutes.
I would return to Conrad again for a leisure trip only. Its location is not close to where I need to be when in NYC and I do like to walk places as much as possible. The room rate is on the higher side, but the room is worth the price in size
