“Great atmosphere and good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 1, 2013

This is a charming little place outside Washington, DC near the Potomac River. Seating both on the ground floor and upstairs. A narrow spiral staircase leads you the the second floor. I had the Maryland Crab Cakes with fries. Another person in my party had the North Carolina trout and had no complaints. Both plates were presented nicely. I would go back the next time I'm in the Washington, DC area.

“Old tricks still work for an old dog”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

I love Old Angler's in the warm months when you can eat outside. We tried it on a cold winter night, and loved that they'd built a fire in the pond area to welcome us. The food was good, and the service was mostly attentive. But the staff seemed either really stressed, or like they were really wishing they were somewhere else. I don't know how to explain it. The service is usually pretty distant -- they don't get all friendly, and are reserved. But this was another level of reserve, to the point where they wouldn't even recommend between three options. Odd. The steak was grisly. The creme brulee is the best anywhere though, so I'm glad we were there.

“Wonderful Christmas dinner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

This was our 3rd Christmas dinner here. It has become a much anticipated tradition for us. The restaurant and its setting could not be more attractive on a cold Christmas evening. We were seated this time in the back room on the second floor, which we definitely preferred. It is quieter than the front room, and there is more room between the tables. While the last couple of years, the menu has been a bit limited, they really went all-out this year with a terrific selection of interesting appetizers and entrees. The scallop dish was spectacular. We have never tasted better. The only small issues were with the desert and our server. The cheesecake was bland with a slight aftertaste, but the creme brulee was perfect. Our server was disinterested, distracted, and largely absent. Other staff were flawless.

“A spot in the (closeby) country”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 10, 2012

All by itself (the nearest other restaurants are 3 miles away in Potomac Village.) Across the street from the C&O Canal, which by itself is a great spot to take a hike, run or a casual walk. The formal dining room needs some work, but I can safely recommend the outdoor patio in the front or the outdoor bar in the rear. Happy hour is good value.

“Date Night”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2012

Our favorite for date night. An outside table in the late spring or early fall: perfect for an anniversary or birthday dinner or for any date night. The interior dining room experience is much more "cozy" (crowded), but we love heading there when it's crazy cold outside - great fireplace.
The menu has evolved, devolved and rebounded over the years, and right now the food is GREAT. Lot's of traditional high-end choises and some really original and awesome new creations from the current chef.
