“Surprisingly exceeded my extremely low expectations”

First of all, I thought Howard Johnson went out of business and was surprised that my friend had reserved a place at one. I was expecting the worst..Howard Johnson just sounds bad!
Surprisingly, HoJo wasn't "that" bad. The bed was actually really comfortable and the sheets were soft. I'm not a fan of the nasty skin thin "comforter" but I can get past that. The room was good enough. The bathroom was good enough.
The Indians that ran the place were strange and not accomodating. They did a lot of random yelling in the hallways in the morning. When we requested two more pillows for the bed they were never delivered. The soda machine didn't have any water so we had to drive to 7-11 to get some. The TV worked and even had a remote which had the batteries taped inside because the piece to hold them in was obviously missing.
Unfortunately we didn't get to experience the Rise & Dine breakfast. I'm sure it would have been a knock out!
This is a great place if you are just in need of a place to sleep. Nicer hotels can be found in Owings Mills, the town next to Pikesville.

“A Crummy, Indian-run hotel”

I stayed here for one night and had a decent, if dated room, very large, with heavy newish furniture. The staff is really off the hook, straight out of a b-grade movie. Bullet-proof glass! This is a Indian or Pakistani-run place and it shows. The place will make a middle-class American uncomfortable, less for the rooms than for the slum attitude and atmosphere present. It is not located near downtown baltimore, but closer to the suburban Pikesville area. It is adjacent to the orthodox jewish neighborhood of upper Park Heights, but is within Baltimore County as opposed to Baltimore City.
I understand this hotel is now a Howard Johnsons.

“Ghetto Motel”

Howard Johnson Pikesville

Jun 14, 2007
5/5 found this review helpful

Our whole purpose for this trip was to go to Pimlico race track. This place was the ghetto motel. Thank God we only stayed there for 1 night. 1) The neighborhood was scary. 2) The room was not very clean. Everything is outdated. The mattresses were old. The sheets were yellow. We had to sleep on top of the comforter. 3) After the night from hell, I got up to shower. Surprise!!! No cold water. We had to shower with the ice bucket out of the sink next to the shower. Showering ghetto style was not fun. I recommend not to stay anywhere in that general area. All the motel/hotels were in the same shape. After we left that awful place the trip was fun.

“Stay far, far away”

There's something truly terrifying about arriving alone late at night, walking past assorted shiftless men into the lobby of the Econolodge in Pikesville. The lobby desk is encased with shatterproof plexiglass and the several closed circuit monitors suggest that this is the kind of place where bad things go on.

I'm guessing the gold-toothed luggage-less purse-less female guest walking familiarly to a room is probably not visiting her grandmother. The room prices are printed in such a way as to emphasize the Jacuzzi upgrade and suggest that, despite the frequency of your stays here, the room prices are not negotiable. And how incongruous to see a tourist kiosk with pamphlets inviting guests to explore Lancaster county!

If I had any responsibility for anyone else--child, sick aunt, pet turtle--I would have simply turned and left.

The room was so bad that before I did anything else I took pictures.

Stark, neglected, forlorn, stripped to the barest necessities--all came to mind. If Econolodge HQ could just see this...

It reminded me of prison except I've never been to prison. Thin towels, cheap sheets, no clock or even shampoo bottles (how much of my $69 would it take to put shampoo bottles in the bathroom?). Then there was the poor ceiling repair job, the handwritten emergency exit signage, and the peephole whose lens was replaced with a wad of toilet tissue.

I did not feel safe enough to return for my 2nd night. I suggest you stay far away from here until they address these fundamental problems.

“Online misrepresentations”

Howard Johnson Pikesville

Aug 13, 2004
14/14 found this review helpful

We accessed online all the Econolodges near Inner Harbor to find a clean, reasonably priced one. The Basic Amenities listed online included a microwave and fridge, necessities for us on our trip. The info also indicated continental breakfast. When we arrived, we discovered it was in a seedy area too close to the city. I learned from the desk clerk that there was NO continental breakfast, NO fridges at all and MICROWAVES at $10/day. I told the clerk these amenities were listed online and that the reservationist at the 800 number indicated there would be a fridge and microwave and NEVER mentioned extra charges. The clerk said that was incorrect information. I thereupon canceled my reservation and sat in the car after a 3 hour drive from home calling other hotels. I asked the clerk to please inform his manager to update the info online so that it is an ACCURATE representation of what amenities are REALLY available. The clerk was very helpful and apologetic and I acknowledged it was not HIS fault that Econo Lodge engages in false advertising. This was a real disappointment as my son and I have been staying at Econo Lodge's in other areas for years. The bottom line is that online information is not valid or reliable, at least not for Econo Lodge!
