“First trip to Ocean City”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 27, 2011

Our first trip to OC and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Staff was extremely friendly and very helpful with suggestions on activities. Loved the rocking chairs on the front porch. Rooms need updating, but were clean and functional.
We made reservations to return in the fall.

Room Tip: Ask for Ocean Front room. They were updated during the 2010-11 winter.

Fantastic location, wonderful restaurant fit for foodies, friendly service, excellent bargain rates. The water front boardwalk location with the boardwalk train going by your front door makes up for the old wallpaper and vintage bathrooms. A/C works great, handicapped accessible, parking lot. On site are gourmet restaurant and a casual cafe and a separate piano bar and outdoor dining, both formal and casual, and ice cream shop and 2 gift and sundries shops. Rent beach chairs and umbrellas a few steps from the door.

We have been staying in the apartments for over 10 years, this year was the worst. Housekeeping is terrible!!!!! I know the rooms are old but I think if they would run the sweeper and clean the kitchen and bathroom floor (hair everywhere) and clean out the shower everyday things could look and feel alot better. I like being close to the beach and boardwalk. And another thing is why are they letting pets stay and do there business on the front lawn and in the courtyard. The hotel and apartments are going downhill. Don't think we will be staying there next year. If you are looking for a clean room I do not recommend......

Phillips Beach Plaza Hotel on the Boardwalk in Ocean City, MD offers a 3 bedroom apartment behind the hotel and just what my family needed for a quick get away vacation. The lobby and restaurant are gorgeous but, don't go past the lobby. The apartment was 60's style old. We were greeted by a friendly front porch. Inside was a nightmare with paneling on the walls, old cat photos, torn lampshades, noisy ceiling fans, rusty bathroom fixtures and a bathroom ceiling and floor that needs to be renovated badly. The pull out sleeper sofa was disgusting with old food and trash thrown underneath and never cleaned. The hotel offers daily maid service, but the only thing the maid service did was replace the used towels. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS HOTEL TO ANYONE.

This review is for the hotel, not the "apartments." If you are looking for ultra modern latest and greatest fad in styling, don't stay here. This building is old, and I like it. Old school charm, decor, and manners...
There are no balconies. Stucco walls and swirled ceiling panels, tiled bathrooms with enough water pressure to power wash a deck. A slow old mirrored elevator with an analog control panel, and actuall keys for the rooms.
We stayed during "senior week" where O.C. is invaded by hoardes of what the locals refer to as "June Bugs", high school seniors there for the week, partying and carousing. They didn't stay at the Plaza (mercifully!)
The Plaza is clean, the staff helpful and friendly, the porch with the DJ each night was wonderful, sitting back, relaxing, people watching and enjoying the evening.

We originally were staying in Assteague, but our site was not ready so we had to rent a hotel for one night, and for cheap. The Visitors center got the room for us for only $91. Although out room didn't have a view, the rooms were nice, and clean. It was not noisy, and the staff was very friendly. The bathrooms are a bit small and old-looking, but the shower had good water pressure. The best part? The rocking chairs on the front porch. My sister and I sat while the kids walked the boardwalk, but even they came up and sat for a while. All in all, nice old place and for a nice price, so we are looking to rent another room for this year, the night before we start camping at Assateague.

Since most boardwalk hotels are known for being expensive and dirty, this was a welcome change. The rooms are low-priced, very small, and the bathrooms tiny and old-fashioned, but the hotel itself is great. Free, convenient parking is a rarity on the boardwalk, but here you have it. Yes, most guests are seniors. That, plus the age of the building (built 1920's) and the thick walls makes it quiet and friendly. The staff is very welcoming. My favorite thing is the big front poor with rocking chairs overlooking the boardwalk for peope-watching. We bought drinks from the bar and enjoyed them on the porch. One funny thing happened there: An inebriated older lady on the tram looked up at the rocking chair occupants when it stopped and slurred, "Why don't you take a picher!".
The piano bar, with red velvet sofas and luxurious Victorian decor, is charming. The piano player and singer were fantastic.
Don't be fooled by the Philip's name. The cafe looks like an upscale restaurant, but is nothing like the Philip's Seafood Restaurant chain. The food is cheap and very bad. Eat at the Brass Balls for breakfast, Fager's Island for dinner. Beware of boardwalk food in general.
