On the way down to the Ocean City board walk, we passed by this crab shack on the road. It did not look like much at all, except for the fact that it had a lot of people eating there. We passed by again much later and the same thing - lots of customers. It seemed to be like the people's choice, so we made a trip back a few days later to try it ourselves.
Service: It is a strictly carry out or eat outside place. They offer a brisk carryout window at all times, but particularly in the morning if you are travelling to the beach. On the outside, they have 18 painted picnic tables all on beach sand. When you order inside (go inside and not to the takeout window to eat there), you get your receipt with a picnic table number to go to. Tables have a number painted in black on it. The server will bring your order in styrofoam containers. You get a crab hammer and a bucket for crab shells. Some have said that service was lacking, but at the time we went (admittedly at an off peak time), we found they were very attentive for a casual style place.
Food: Tried a variety of items from soft shell, crab cakes, fried clams, the sides (did not try the steamed crabs that they are popular for). All items were quite good in taste, freshness, presentation.
Atmosphere: You are seated outside, but looking at the highway so not much to see except the cars and the Hampton Inn across the street. There is a covering over most of the tables for bad weather. There is a bin of beach toys for children in the north side of the table sandlot.
Tipping: We were confused by whether to tip or not because it is situated like a take out joint (you order, you pay, you sit), but there are 'wait' staff that bus tables, ask you if you need any more drinks and bring your order etc. The wait staff appear to be young and students, so tipping seemed appropriate to us.
Parking: Really small place and small parking lot on both sides of the shack. I really don't know where people put their cars when it is very busy.
Oveall: Better than average food. It is different from a restaurant and somehow it feels 'honest' in the experience - no real glitz, no fast food mascots, just a crab shack business serving pretty good stuff.
