“Old rooms great restaurant”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2006

We stayed at the Wisp resort for 2 nights for a familly reunion. I guess because we were given a group rate, they put us in the original building of the resort. Very much in need of an update. Polyester bedspreads, pilled blankets concrete block walls, dirty carpeting and plastic glasses. Tolerable since it was clean. The highlight was the restaurant. Exceptional wine list and actual Reidel glasses. Victoria Buckel, the manager was gracious and very knowledgeable. The menu was very interesting and the food of excellent quality. Good place to eat, if you don't have to stay at the hotel.

I'd really like to give this place 3 1/2 stars ... I visited the Wisp with my teenage son, looking for a summer resort that offered mountain biking, water sports etc. Wisp has great deals ... we got in on a 3 for 2-night price and enjoyed our time there. Could have been better, could have been worse.

PROS: Big room with a refrigerator. The restaurant, DC's, has excellent food and very fair prices -- I had the best prime rib I've ever had there -- but it's the only restaurant on premises and it's closed Sundays, so if you're there for several nights you'll want to explore. The activities are very well equipped, e.g., Precision kayaks, Cannondale mountain bikes. And it's in a beautiful location with a great mountain for advanced cyclists.

CONS: No outdoor pool. Don't believe the website and think that this is on the lake. You can see the lake from the hotel but there's no access -- if you want to kayak or swim it's a good 10-15 minute drive away. The activities staff is not well-trained or knowledgeable, and if you're going to be doing something like mountain biking or paintball you have to know that they're not going to give you a lot of attention or direction. There's not a lot of adult supervision so it's very much survival of the fittest. I saw kids going down expert mountain biking trails that shouldn't have been even on the easy trails. I saw expert paintball shooters put in a game with young novices, with painful welts resulting.

BOTTOM LINE: If you know what you're doing with your mountain bike or whatever, and you're looking for an inexpensive place to do it, this is a good place to stay.

My family and a number of other families stayed at Wisp over Christmas for a number of years. They have started renovated lately, and it seems they're trying to cater to a more upscale crowd. Generally speaking, the food is tasty, but it's not gourmet. Rooms are comfortable, but don't expect luxury. All in all, Wisp is best for families looking not for luxury and pampering, but a nice chance to spend time on the slopes with loved ones.

August 2005
Spent 3 nights at the Wisp Resort with our family of five -kids 14, 16, 17. Our room was in the tower area which had been recently renovated. We had a 2 room suite with 2 doubles in one, a murphy queen bed in the sitting room which viewed the mountain and golf course. Nothing fancy but very well planned and comfortable. Staff was very helpful and there was tons to do, alot of activities included with your room. Indoor pool, chairlift rides, hiking, tennis, paintball, boarding park, bike rentals, mountain boarding, golf, etc. Room had a small fridge and a decent continental breakfast was included.
About an hour's drive to Falling Waters (reservations needed) and fun rafting on the Youghigeny River (we went to Ohiopyle area and rafted with Whitewater Adventures ). I found the rates at the Wisp to be very reasonable and Deep Creek to be a great family resort area. A great way to relax after four busy days in Washington, DC.

We have stayed at the Wisp Hotel during ski season once or twice for the last couple of years and have always enjoyed our experience. The hospitality of the staff is particularly noteworthy. The convenience to the slopes (especially for night skiing), and the availability of ski lockers is worth the price alone. Onsite restaurants or local pizza delivery means you don't have to move your car if you don't want to.
After a day of activities, a dip in the pool is wonderful as is the hot tub. The rooms are basic but clean. This is a great place to stay for a family or anyone who makes the slopes their priority.
