Looking through the Entertainment book last night, we decided to give the Charred Rib a try. We had been there several times in the past, but it's the type of restaurant you tend to forget about. Not because the food isn't good, but because it's off the main road and there are so many other good rib places on York road.
We arrived and walked inside to see the same decor that's been there for years. Same wallpaper, same art for sale on the wall, same menu. It has the feel of a place people go because of exactly that reason. No surprises, you know what you'll get.
The menu had a few interesting specials, a page of weeknight (Monday through Thursday) specials, and three pages of choices. I noticed a few of the items had small stars next to them. On the bottom, clearly marked is a statement informing the diner that coupons cannot be used on those items. Most of the starred items were seafood dishes. Ok, fair enough. Ingrediants are more expensive and they don't want to discount those items. My wife enjoys crab cakes and that item was starred. The rib platter, which I chose was not starred
The coupon states an $8 discount when ordering 2 dinners, a $4 discount when dining alone.
The waitress told me I COULD NOT use the $4 discount on my dinner (NOT a starred item) because "I was not dining alone". HUH???????
That didn't make sense to me. If I were dining alone, they would not have the income they earned on my wifes full price for my wife's dinner. Note that we also ordered wine and crab soup. It's the kind of nickle and dime charge that leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
That said, the food was good. Though the crab cake was small for $19.95 (plus 2 sides) it was good. Not outstanding, but good. My ribs were good too. A bit fatty, even though I asked for them to be charred well, but were meaty and had good flavor. The crab soup was the star of the night. It was served spicy, but no so spicy all you taste is pepper. The broth was rich, stocked with vegitables and some crab meat.
Service was slow, but it's not the fault of the waitress. She pretty much had all the tables.
So would we go back? Probably, but not for awhile. But I might pick up some soup for carry out.
