We stayed at the Marriott Hunt Valley for 4 nights in May, 2008. Overall, the hotel is OK but it's showing its age. I have stayed in other Marriott properties before and this one seemed like it was in need of a complete rebuild, not just new carpet and drapes.
The hotel was clean, and we did get a fair rate. The carpet and furniture looked new, and there was a flat panel T.V. in the rooms. We were there for a conference and the staff handled the accomodations very well, especially considering how large a group (300+ people) we had. The fitness room looks recently renovated. A free shuttle took us to the very nice open air mall down the street. Two train stations are within walking distance and you can ride the train to downtown Baltimore for $3.20 roundtrip. Parking at the hotel is free.
The reason I'm not completely enthusiastic about this property is because the hotel seems dated and the layout is very confusing. Since things were clean, I hesitate to see this as a complete negative; but I found myself walking through the confusing hallways looking out onto the retro courtyards thinking that I was back in 1985 when this place was probably built. The facility is comprised of several wings, and if you're in one of the distant wings like we were, it's a rather long walk just to get to the front desk or restaurant. Even the maintenace man we passed in the hallway made a joke about the long, confusing hallways. I mused that you would find this place in an architectural textbook as an example of how NOT to design a hotel.
The bathrooms in the rooms are smaller than those found in today's typical hotel rooms, and I thought the beds were rather thin and uncomfortable. Beds at a Hampton Inn are much better. The A/C in our room was anemic; and there was no refrigerator in the room either. Internet access was very disappointing. Although we had free wifi, I typically had VERY slow download speeds around 20K! The swimming pool was a decent size as was the hot tube. The area around the pool was messy with pool toys everywhere and the pool water was very cloudy but warm. There was a Lifegaurd who would not permit us to swim in the outside portion of the pool (it's an inside / outside type of layout and we were there after dark.)
Breakfast was not included; a buffett without omelets or pancakes cost $9.75. For omelets and / or pancakes, the price increased to $14.75.
If I was President of the Marriott brand, I would look at a major rebuild of this place. It looks too old and is somewhat disfunctional due to the confusing layout. No "Wow" factor whatsoever.
Next time we're in Hunt Valley we'll probably stay at the Embassy Suites accross the street for around the same price.
