My first review to tripadvisor, though I have used the site often. I just left the Super8 Havre de Grace this morning, and will be filling out a very positive guest comment card to send into the main office. I only wish that I had remembered to bring my digital camera so that I could attach some photos. Perhaps in two weeks, when I will be returning.

I have stayed here perhaps a dozen times over the past three years. Admittedly, I did in jest previously term this place the "Not so Super 8" but no more. This is the only pet-friendly motel I know of in the immediate area. I have a boat slipped nearby but when it is out of the water I need to stay somewhere close that allows dogs. You could go up to Aberdeen but anyone who takes pets is probably full. Thus I really have no choice, not that I would want one anymore.

Previous comments were seen as valid until my recent return. What a difference a year makes. My ground floor room appeared recently renovated. It was spotless; I stayed an extra night just because it felt so comfortable and because I really love the two restaurants that bracket the building (one is Zagat rated). The high-speed internet worked flawlessly throughout my stay and allowed me the convenience of staying that extra day. The cable had more channels than a Hilton I recently stayed in, if TV is your thing.

The ground floor back door problem (see previous guest comment) has been solved. This WAS a security risk plus leaving it open allowed cold air to permeate the ground floor. Also, the smoking rooms are near the once always open door so cigarette smoke found its way underneath your door at the far end and made for an uncomfortable stay.

If you stay with a dog, you want to stay on the ground floor. That always open with a rock back door is NOW a security lock door (you need your key card) plus there is a buffer door inside. Good job, Super 8! You can still pick up the cigarette smoke but it is nowhere near as bad.

Keep in mind that what with limited places to stay in the area other than bed&breakfast inns, you are going to get contractors or some transient sales groups passing through. I have seen this here more than once but never had a problem. The motel employees always have a smile and will fulfill any request. The coffee pot and orange juice was always full in the morning and the breakfast bar area was spotless.

This is an older building, but I believe management is doing the best they can with it. That's why I was so impressed this week; if you think about it--what with them being the only game in town so to speak--they could let this place get rundown and still book rooms. They're not doing this.

For the money (I do use AAA) and the location, I don't see how you can go wrong with staying here.

Not too bad a place at all - the room were clean and the staff was very helpful with directions and help. The outside was good (for a cold winters day), and the inside was decent. I stay at Super 8's quite a bit, and this one while not the best, is one of the better ones. I will definately stay here again.

“Stay away”

Super 8 Havre de Grace

This motel looks like a nice, clean Super 8 from the street during the daytime. We checked in without a problem. Later we noticed people loitering around the front and back of the motel. There is a fire door in the rear of he building which has an alarm attached and is supposed to be closed at all times according to the sign on it. However, this door was being kept open with a large rock, and after going out for the evening and returning, we found that it remained that way. We advised the manager regarding our concerns, and he was very pleasant, and the door was then closed. Later, we noticed more people loitering, some of which looked like they were on drugs (one guy was sitting slumped over with his eyes closed on the front curb, looking completely out-of-it, not just meditating!). We saw some of those same people going to a room on the same floor we were staying on where what sounded like a loud party was going on. We immediately notified the manager and asked him if we could be moved to another room. He told us that we had the last non-smoking room in the motel and that he would take care of the problem. He went to the room, and we saw him knock on the door and tell the occupants that they were being too loud. Well, that didn't help matters much. These motel guests traveled from room to room on our floor and the one above us all night, making plenty of noise. We were awakened twice by phone calls from people calling the wrong room in the middle of the night. Couple that with the four trains that came through during the night sounding their horns long and loud, we learned that this was no place to ever stay again. I called the manager in the morning to inform him that we would be checking out early due to the noise, and he was appologetic, and told me that "a lot of those people have checked-out". This was not true, since we say many of them in the halls, hanging around outside, not looking like they were checking out. And while the exterior has curb appeal, the interior was on the dark side (in more ways than one), and the blankets were old and did not appear to have been washed. Sheets were of poor quality, old and stained. The "super start" breakfast was pitiful (if it even matters at this point), with limp little bagels, some sort of muffins, coffee and tea. I get the sense that this is not a family motel, and more of a local venue for some.
