It was after 9 p.m. on the Sunday before Memorial Day. We were looking for a place to eat before heading home, and we stumbled upon the Ritz. It's a tiny place on the corner, with about 4 tables inside (some are round and seat larger parties) and 3 or 4 outside. Despite our wandering in late on a Sunday night of a holiday weekend, and despite their having had a long, busy day, we were greeted with a smile, and given great service. Although not on the menu, the server made me a delicious iced coffee to start. We sat outside at the corner table, which faces the quiet business district across the street in one direction, and private homes in the other.
The menu runs the gamut from inventive sandwiches, like Waldorf chicken salad with walnuts, grapes "and a touch of curry"; Santa Fe Chicken; the "Jezebel Ham Club", the "Sophia Lauren Italian Club" (Italian meats and cheeses), Authentic Cuban Sandwich...
to various delicious-sounding quiches and tortas, chicken pot pie, baked penne romano, shrimp salad, and "Crab crepes Charleston" (next time I will try them). And, of course, the crab cake sandwich, which I had. There were also soups on the menu, including cold cucumber. Many of the item descriptions on the menu featured fresh herbs and spices, and special sauces, but the goal seemed to be to enhance the dish rather than overpower.
Our sandwiches came with their "mesculyn salad "bowl"", which the menu describes as "generous". It is big, and, I would add, delicious. The large, extremely fresh salad featured spring-mix-style greens, ripe, red tomato, yellow pepper, cucumber, and black olives. It was a meal in itself.
The crab cake sandwich was delicious, and came on toast with optional lemon aoili, excellent red bliss potato salad, cole slaw, and beautiful red tomato wedges. The Jezebel club was huge, attractive, and delicious, and came with a special hot sauce (and I do mean HOT) and potato chips.
Everything was served on beautiful china, or in pretty glasses or goblets, including the salad dressing. There was great attention to detail.
For dessert, we had a key lime tart and a fruit tart. Both were great, although not made on the premises. There were plenty of great-looking desserts in the case.
Inside, there were board games and other things to play with or look at. The address is 100 North Washington Street. I can't wait to go back!
