Hempen Hill BBQ was founded on a simple concept. Create awesome food, enjoy it with your favorite Pint in the company of friends. Oh yeah, and have FUN when ya do it!! So no surprise when you come into HHBBQ there’s a delicious aroma of BBQ floating around, AWESOME craft beers are on tap and a fun “Vibe” in the air. We are ALL ABOUT pushing the envelope so you’ll find out of the box things like Organic Liquors, Beers & Wines, Local Farm Fresh Veggies, great Vegetarian Dishes & Meatless Monday Dinner Deals, NO Foam boxes/cups … just to name a few. So stop in, Try the Award-winning “Q” grab a pint & enjoy! The idea of owning a restaurant has always been a dream of ours! We are known for countless parties at our home on “Hempen Hill” – Yes, named after a local brew, Hempen Ale, that we enjoyed while building our home. Our parties became a test kitchen of sorts to try out new ideas on friends/family. So late December of 2004 we took a leap of faith and formed HEMPEN HILL BBQ CATERING. After one short year of Catering success, we took yet another leap into a full service restaurant in October 2006. It is because of great staff, faithful regulars and awesome guests that Hempen Hill BBQ has become what it is today… The Place Where Locals go! Thanks for making our dreams into a reality. “The pull of pulled pork”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

So where is a likely good place for great barbeque?
a. A smoky cabin with a hand painted BBQ sign by the roadside in South Carolina
b. A restaurant decorated with neon signs and cartoons of pigs in Memphis
c. A suburban shopping center in Hagerstown, Maryland
Give up? The answer is "All of the above"
From the outside, the Hempen Hill BBQ almost looks like a pizza place nestled among the strip shopping center facades, but inside it's serious BBQ all the way. We pulled in on a bus trip with over 50 people and were seated and served quickly and efficiently.(It was prearranged) Most people got the pulled pork and the only compliant was that there was too much to eat for lunch.
The pork was piled high and had a nice vinegary tang. If you are passing through Hagerstown, give it a try.
The only negative is the place's logo, a chicken with the photoshopped head of a pig. It is supposed to convey the idea of "freakishly good BBQ", but It's vaguely disturbing enough to make you go Vegan.

“Worst BBQ I have ever had”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2013 via mobile

We sat for 10 min before being acknowledge for drinks. I think the ice was rationed! The waitress was emotionless! Everything was overly dry, except the potato salad that was swimming in liquid of some kind. My husband sent his tasteless sausage back! The texture of the pulled pork was different, to say the least. Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else!

“Good food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

The food was good, but for the cost there should have been more. Not really my type of atmosphere, but acceptable. Service was fair but not really great. Probably wouldn't go there again

“This was great BBQ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 17, 2013

This was great BBQ! Five colleagues and I had lunch and this place was packed! I had the Blazin’ Saddles, others had the Pit Beef, BBQ Yard Bird, and NC Pulled Pork. Every sandwich was excellent – at least mine was and they said the same! Beyond the BBQ, I also choose the Hand-Cut Fries and they were OUTSTANDING – Fresh cut, real potatoes… they were almost as good as the BBQ. My only complaint? I ate too much (but couldn’t stop) and a nap would have been nice lol… I will be back!

“Great Pulled Pork BBQ!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2013

One of the best sandwiches in the tri-state area. They also have a large craft beer selection on tap.
