“Excellent stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2014

We where staying here for five days and it was wonderful. The breakfast was good for a hotel, the rooms where very pretty too. They had a mini van that could take you to the metro for free! One day, we had a leaky roof in our bathroom from the people above us and we told the front desk and they said they would get to it right away. We went to the metro in the van then came back and it was like our roof never leaked! This was a very good stay!

We were there for a week long National Championship Soccer tournament in July at $120/night plus tax for 2 double beds. This hotel was appointed to us by the tournament, we had no choice, and we were the only team at the hotel. Yes, the beds were doubles, not queens. Desk staff and manager were friendly and eager to assist. Room was nicely appointed. Bed was comfy. Hotel provides a shuttle to the Metro station which is used for easy access to Washington, DC. Free breakfast was better than average. It included boiled eggs, yogurts,, pastries, bagels and breads, fruits, eggs, sausage patties, waffles, juices, milks, coffee, tea, hot chocolate. When reservation was made, I requested a QUIET room away from elevators, ice machines, etc. Room assigned was across from elevators. I went back down to desk and requested another room. Clerk said that I was not next to an elevator, but rather I was across from the elevator. REALLY??? Anyway, I got switched. Unfortunately, this room was not quiet either as there was construction going on at the hotel and the bucket truck and bucket were right outside my 6th floor window and work started very early. Due to the construction, parking was limited. Additionally, the hotel has a wheelchair bound permanent resident, who I will refer to as Mr. P and who appears to be homeless. Mr. P is not a nice person. He harassed our group from the get go. We had a dinner in the lounge area and he got mad when we didn't give him the leftovers! Not only that, but he got nasty with us. He was in and out of the breakfast area throughout the breakfast hours and was never pleasant. He did not change his clothes the entire week that we were there. He said nasty things to our soccer team, as well as to us about the team. The hotel is not located in a nice area. Homeless people are drawn to the hotel, and the hotel seems to cater to them. One might vacuum the concrete in front in exchange for using the lobby restroom for cleaning himself up for example. The hotel is located next to a hookah house that runs long into the night. There is no shopping or dining near the hotel. The elevator got stuck in between the 4th and 5th floor for 45 minutes one night with many of our soccer players on it. Rather than care about the safety of the group in the elevator, the desk clerk told us that if the fire department was called and the doors were damaged, that we would be charged thousands of dollars for the repair!!! The elevator was eventually emptied by the manager and my husband through the hole on top of the elevator with no injuries. The manager told us that the same thing had happened to a softball team at an earlier time. Two days later, the elevator got stuck with only one person on it. I would suggest that the hotel repair the elevator and put an "overload" alarm on the elevator like other hotels so that the buzzer sounds and the doors will not shut. The manager checked on us while in the breakfast area the next morning, but never once offered any type of compensation for the "inconvenience." Oh, I don't know, but any other hotel probably would have "comped" one night, or provided a dinner at some restaurant somewhere. Please don't lose sight that the beds were comfy. It is right next to the interstate for traveling purposes.

Dear Ms. “Pherby”,

Thank you for your kind words about our staff, our well appointed rooms, our bountiful breakfast options, and our comfortable bedding. Our staff and I truly appreciate getting to know your entire team and building a great rapport with most of the parents and the coaches.

I was disheartened to read your review about our guest in a wheelchair, “Mr. P.”. As you mentioned our staff was always eager to help our guests. This is true; we pride ourselves especially in assisting our guests with disabilities. Mr. P. is far from being homeless; he is a paying guest and has spent close to $250,000 in the past few years that he has stayed with us. He is a retired botanical expert from one of the leading museums in Washington D.C., and he does not look for hand outs or leftovers as you described. Not to share too much about his personal life, we were saddened when he recently lost one leg below the knee due to diabetes, thus being in a wheelchair. I hope you can appreciate our staff caring for an elderly gentleman and supporting him through this difficult time and treating him with respect and not demeaning him due to his new handicap.

In regards to the lack of dining options, we have six restaurants in walking distance that offer discounts to our guests. I believe most of your team was familiar with these restaurants.

As you know the elevator got stuck between the two floors due to 20 of the soccer players squeezing in the elevator at one time. The college softball team that you mentioned was 3 years ago, and they too thought it was cute to see if 19 of their players could fit in the elevator. Our elevators are inspected by the State of Maryland annually, and by our elevator company quarterly. We are in compliance with all of the rules and regulations of our State’s elevator codes. In place of providing dinner at a restaurant for the team, we absorbed the hefty bill for the service call to put the elevator back in operation after the incident, even though it was not our fault the elevator got stuck.

I am also proud to report our renovations are now complete and we look forward to showing you our brand new looking hotel on your next visit. I wish you and the team much success with your future tournaments and congratulate your team on how well they played and all the success that they earned in the National Championship tournament. Our staff and I were proud that your team stayed at our property and we look forward to hosting your team in the future.

At your service,

We had a coupon but they wouldn't honor it because it wasn't a weekend. But the person was very nice and gave us a discount anyway pretty much close to what the coupon was for. The room was very lovely and clean, it was quiet, you didn't hear a bunch of noise when people walk down the halls. The breakfast was very nice and all was very tasty. Even though we checked out the next day, they offered to let us use their shuttle from the hotel to the Metro and then they came and picked us up as well even though we weren't spending another night there. It made a very comfortable trip for us. We were nervous about DC anyway, but they gave us detailed descriptions on what to do and where to go and having the shuttle back and forth was very nice. Thank you for all you did.

A free shuttle to/from the metro station (~5 min ride to station and ~another 30 min to downtown), a free breakfast, flat screen tv, and refigerator and microwave in room. I am a mom and stayed with two teenage girls and they loved the breakfast which had many options. The service was fine, the room was clean and the manager was extremely accommodating when I paid with the wrong credit card! Compared to other hotels in the same category but closer to DC, which were unbelievably more expensive, this hotel is fantastic!
I would stay there again if I return to the area. If you are a walker you can walk to/from metro station but the roads are main and congested with traffic so it may not be an ideal walk for many. The area seemed safe (there is a big mall close), we felt safe at the hotel and at the metro station (as safe as you can at any metro station). I almost booked another hotel (in VA) because it was slightly cheaper then I read a review by two women that did not even stay after cheking in because they felt unsafe.
For the price and our needs this was the best bang for our buck!

This hotel offers a package that includes a $40 gift card to a local restaurant as well as metro passes for all in your party. This made our stay worthwhile. There is free shuttle service to the metro which is a 3 minute car ride. From the Shady Grove metro, it is about a 35 minute ride to the Smithsonian stop(with a transfer) at Metro Center. The included breakfast is standard hotel fare, but was good. The hotel is currently remodeling the exterior, so there is a lot of outside activity. Our room(301) was clean, but a little dated. The sink leaks on the underside, and we told the hotel staff...hopefully, it'll be fixed when you stay!

We wanted to visit DC and decided to look for a hotel along the metro line. Much less expensive than staying closer to the city. This hotel had it all: free metro shuttle ( on demand- just call when you want to be picked up) free parking, and free breakfast. The rooms were clean and spacious, and the pool was delightfully refreshing after a long day of walking in the city. I would definitely stay here again a and recommend it to others.
