“Nice Quiet Hotel, Great Location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2014

Very convenient to popular restaurants and DC Metro line. 40-45 min. Trip to DC attractions. Freeway accessible, free parking right next to the hotel. Very nice happy hour with a deck overlooking a man made lake. I would certainly return.

I stayed at the Marriott Courtyard as part of a business trip and previously stayed at another Marriott hotel within the same retail / entertainment complex too. The Courtyard is definitely preferable to the other hotel. The first thing to note for European readers of this review is that the Courtyard is within the Washingtonian Centre which is, to all intents and purposes, in the middle of nowhere! So, forget the idea of using the location as a base for public transport links. Access to a private vehicle or a hire car is therefore essential. I had the former so was able to travel to nearby Rockville easily enough.

The hotel itself was clean and comfortable, and my room facilities were as you might expect from a Marriott. I experienced a lost baggage issue on my outbound journey and the hotel staff on the desk were very friendly and helpful sorting me out with some toiletries. Unfortunately I was working very hard during my stay and left every morning before breakfast, so I can't comment on the quality of the breakfast buffet.

The Washingtonian Centre provides entertainment for the lone business traveller in the evenings. There are plenty of shops, cafés, restaurants, etc., so whilst the location can be a little isolating, there is always something to provide a distraction in the evening. The Centre itself can be both interesting and surreal, exuding an almost Disneyland/ theme part atmosphere. Those who have been here will know exactly what I am referring to!!

Great place to stay! Staff very accomodating (we checked in around 11PM). Inspite of having a huge youth group staying at the hotel, rooms were quick and clean. Parking was free across the street @ the parking garage. There is a Starbucks across the street for breakfast. Even tho' we arrived late, there were plenty of people walkling in the area...lots of great restaurants and beautiful setting.

Room Tip: Breakfast is around $14/not included with the room like other Courtyards.

I prefer Marriott over other chains in general and have a loyalty membership. I was greeted warmly by the desk staff, who them proceeded to quickly help me overcome the problem that I had inadvertently booked two of the four rooms I needed for a family event at a nearby hotel. Within a few minutes I was straightened out and had all four rooms in Gaithersburg.

The room was clean and quiet (I was a little concerned because it overlooked the street). The "business center" was sufficient for out needs. In-room wifi was free, as was parking in a lot that serves the entire complex.

Two issues were 1) that this Marriott uses plastic mattress covers which crinkle with every turn. I know they are trying to protect us from bed bugs and keep the mattresses clean, but surely there are better alternatives, and 2) my brother was driving in without a smartphone or GPS and called for directions. He received wrong directions and was sent astray after having been on the road for hours. Not appreciated.

The Rio complex was unexpected. I had selected this hotel because it was close to the location for a family event not because I knew anything about the area. It was a pleasant walkable area with lots of street life, kids activities and shopping and dining choices if that was your interest.

Courtyards don't provide breakfast, but there is a Starbucks across the street and several other choices for breakfast. We ate at the Cafe Deluxe and it was very good.

Room Tip: As noted, the rooms on the street side were quiet, and I imagine the rooms on the lake side would be...

My family stayed here for 3 nights as a cousin was getting married in Gaithersburg. The Rio complex has plenty to keep you entertained, with some deli type stores, clothing boutiques, and 2 departmental stores (Kohls and Target). There is also a movie theatre and some restaurants on the other side. The lake is very picturesque, and the track around is an enjoyable short run. The hotel room itself was spacious and the bed was good. The television is slightly outdated but the picture quality is fine. The gym is open 24 hours, even though it is just a few treadmills, a bike and some free weights. The pool is open during the day but I never used it and it seemed a bit small. The frontdesk staff were always very friendly and willing to help with whatever we or any other wedding guests needed. There is a bus that runs fairly often (every 20 minutes or so) to Shady Grove metro station, which takes you right into Washington (40 minutes on the train). Overall very good value for money and a very satisfying stay!

We had a great stay here--comfortable beds, well-furnished rooms, clean bathrooms. Wi-fi is free, and parking is also free, but also a bit of a free-for-all, as it is shared with the parking garage of the Rio shopping, dining, entertainment complex. It can be pretty crowded when there are events happening there, but the top row is reserved with signs for Courtyard Marriott guests. And if you ask about it, you can get a free day pass at the Sport & Health club right nearby, which offers a lap swimming pool and extensive fitness options. The Rio is an interesting combination of shops, restaurants, movies, and activities for the kids (including paddle boats). Altogether, it makes a great value package for the area.

There were some minor service hiccups, like the printer not working for boarding pass printout and a mixup on when to clean the room, but overall, I'd come back to stay here again next time I'm in the area.

This is a nice hotel in a really great area for families on vacation. The hotel is located on the water in Gaithersburg, MD in an area that has a downtown Disney feeling. We arrived at the hotel before noon and were accommodated with a room immediately. The rooms were clean and spacious and the staff was very courteous. The only downside was that the two mirrors that were located in the room were both in the bathroom, however this is a very minor inconvenience and can be overlooked due to all of the other positives. There were several restaurants with outdoor seating in the area as well as a few malls within a safe walking distance of the hotel. Dicks Sporting Goods, Target, Kohl's and a movie theatre are all right there as well as a whole bunch of smaller stores and restaurants. You could park your car and walk to everything you need. There were paddle boats for rent (but someone over 18 needed to be on the boat as well), a merry go round and a small train ride available for the kids. The hotel also provides a shuttle service to the train station at certain times of the day. We did not take advantage of this service and drove to the train station at Shady Grove ourselves (only a few miles away). During the week there was a $5 charge to park your car at the train station and the RT fare into Washington DC was less than $10 pp. The trip into the city was less than 30 minutes and we avoided sitting in rush hour traffic. At night our group all met on the second floor patio overlooking the water with plenty of space for a large crowd. One additional note is that in accordance with MD state law, the pool is only open when a lifeguard is on duty and is not open midday in the middle of the week but there are plenty of other things available to keep the kids busy. The pool was not large, but it was clean and was not crowded when we were there. All in all, this was a really great hotel that I would recommend and stay in again on my next trip to DC.

Room Tip: Even number rooms had a water view
