This tour sounded fun and my partner and I were excited to go on it - we really wanted to like it. I hate to be critical, but the tour on Friday 12th July 2013 was terrible. The success of a ghost tour hinges on the guide's personality, wit, enthusiasm and verbal delivery, to generate a "haunted" atmosphere. I liked our guide as a person - she seemed very nice - but she lacked all of those qualities necessary to generate any form of atmosphere or intrigue. It sounded like she had simply memorized a script, that she churned out without really putting any energy into it.
Halfway through the tour she told the group that she was tired. Maybe so, but we paid our hard-earned money to go on this tour, and we want to be entertained. Sorry, but I don't need to spend my Friday night listening to someone complain about what time they got up in the morning and what a busy job they have during the day.
At one point in the tour, we were told by the guide that "I must be the unluckiest tour guide - nothing spooky ever happens on my tours". Great. Maybe it's true, but does the group need to be told that??!
I could tell that the entire group was really bored mid-way through the tour. Although the guide was terrible, Ellicott City itself is a picturesque town to walk around and some of the locations on the ghost tour could have made for good ghost stories.
