I stayed at the Days Inn in Easton for one night. This was not my first choice of hotels (this is a loosely used term, it should really be called a motel) in the area but unfortunately I booked later than I should have and everything else in the area was full. I checked in around 9pm and was told that I had booked a smoking room. I booked online and I would never intentionally book a smoking room, but the manager said there were no non-smoking rooms available. I didn't want to be difficult and I knew I couldn't get a room anywhere else, so I decided to brave it and sleep in the smoking room. The manager gave me the key and I drove over to the room. The room reeked of smoke and looked very dingy in general. The windows would not open so I could not air it out. I was hoping to take a shower, but the bathroom floor was sticky and there was no way I was getting into the grimy shower. I had to get up very early the next morning, so I decided to just get into bed and try to get to sleep as quickly as possible. I took the comforter off the bed because it smelled of smoke and slept with only the sheet.
I fell asleep quickly, but I woke up at 1:00am to the feel of something crawling up my arm. I jumped out of bed and turned on the lights and saw two small brown bugs scurrying across the bed. I have never seen bedbugs before, so I pulled out my phone and did a quick Google image search, and sure enough, they were bed bugs. I pulled the sheet up and only spotted 3 in total, but I know it only takes one in your luggage to infest everything. I put one of the bugs in a clear plastic water bottle and took it over to the manager immediately after moving all of my things out to the curb next to my car.
The manager's name was Sam Patel. When I showed him the bed bug, he immediately got very defensive and told me that there was no way there were bed bugs in my room #132. He pulled out a stack of paperwork and started flipping though it and showed me the room number #132 with no comments next to the number. He told me this meant that the room #132 was checked and that there were no bed bugs, but he never said the hotel did not have bed bugs. All this tells me is that they must have a problem with bed bugs in other rooms. This also made me realize that for being fully booked, there were not many cars in the parking lot. I am guessing that they have a number of rooms with bed bugs. The manager continued to insist that the room could not have bed bugs, even though I had a bed bug in a water bottle right in front of him. This is my favorite part of the story. The manager, Sam Patel, then accused me of bringing the bed bug with me to get out of paying for the room. At this point, I was really angry and realized that I was not going to make any progress speaking with him any further. I decided to pack up what I could and continue the drive I had planned for the next day.
I will be following up the with Days Inn parent company, Wyndham Hotel Group. The hotel is in a disgusting state and the management is clearly incompetent. I would not recommend that anyone stay at this hotel under any circumstances.
