“Don't stay on the train side!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 days ago NEW

This hotel, formerly a Holiday Inn (and before that, who knows?), is one of those tired 60s-70s era buildings that never seems to have gotten adequately refurbished. Ramada has changed the livery and interior advertising, but not much else. The staff tries very hard, both in the hotel and in the interior restaurant. But it doesn't seem as though their management gives them very much to work with.

The entrance stinks of cigarettes most times of the day, and every hallway and room I've stayed in (4-5X?) smells of stale cigarette smoke barely controlled with some kind of deodorizer. If you dislike the smell of cigarettes, you will hate this hotel.

In fairness, the housekeeping staff does an excellent job and rooms are always reliably clean, absent the cigarette odors. No cockroaches or dirty washbasins here.

When I am in Cumberland, I try to stay at the nearby Marriott Fairfield Inn, a much nicer, cleaner, newer property closer to the C&O Canal and away from the CSX switching yard across the street from the Ramada. If you do stay at the Ramada, ask for a room on the front side of the hotel. Otherwise, you'll be hearing diesel engines moaning and freight car strings banging off and on all night. (In contrast, if you stay at the Fairfield Inn, ask for a room on the back side. The front faces the highway, the back the river and canal: Harleys roaring by day and night in front, park-like quiet in back.)

In case you hadn't figured it out, there aren't a lot of lodging options in Cumberland. If you can't get into the Fairfield Inn, consider the Best Western in LaVale. After that, the Ramada is the next best choice, I'm afraid... (I've only been there on business, and only two nights at a time, so I have never checked out the limited number of B&Bs.)

Room Tip: Front side, higher up. Backside is directly across the highway from a CSX railroad switching yard...

Thank you for sharing your observations. I can't do much about the flaws of a 40 year old hotel but am very happy you noted the pride my staff takes in taking care of our guests. We look forward to your next visit.

Rolled into town on Amtrak's westbound Capitol Limited with plans to ride the eastbound train back to Washington the next morning. Chose the Ramada and not the new Fairfield based on location since we would be walking from the Amtrak station. I had researched the reviews and thought "how bad can it be?"

Well...it could be pretty bad. The room was clean...but there was a funky smell with an overpowering odor from the carpet freshener. The mattresses were totally worn out....you pretty much roll to the sagging middle of the bed. The bathroom was very clean, but the toilet was ancient--was with slow and inefficient flushing action. The ceiling the in the bathroom showed serious signs of moisture and mold.

The elevators were scary and the hallways...very dark..dank..and musty.

Had dinner in the bar/lounge. The food was actually good..BUT..it took nearly an hour to receive it after placing our order. Felt sorry for the staff. They were trying valiantly to keep pace with demand.

The free breakfast was very good with an IMPRESSIVE menu. Our orders were fresh and well prepared. Breakfast is definitely the redeeming feature of this property.

The facility is begging for a refurbishment---but it's so outdated it might be cheaper to raze and start all over. The noise from the very busy CSX mainline didn't really bother us, but if you're a light sleeper and not a railfan you might want to consider other lodgings. The trains were nothing compared to the horrible mattresses.

Dear Electriciandad,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. As owners of the hotel for the past year, your experience is exactly why we are remodeling its bathrooms and continually upgrading the property.I am excited to say each month brings change and improvements. Please allow my staff another opportunity to serve you.

I've been in this Ramada Inn for a few weeks now and have had a pleasant stay considering I've been here for business. The room had a nice size and was quite comfortable. The in house lounge has good drink specials and some very good food also. Your stay also includes a cooked to order breakfast. It's next to the railroad tracks but I had no problems with noise.

Room Tip: Stay o the side opposite the RR tracks.

Traveling back home and stayed there from a review on trip advisor. While the hotel desperately needs a remodel, the staff and great value superseded the looks of the hotel. Had one of the best burgers we ever had! Breakfast included in a.m. was good. Make sure you ask for a room away from the train tracks, although we had no trouble sleeping that night.

We stayed at the Ramada on our way to DC from Michigan. Our first choice was booked for the night so we opted for this motel instead. Although a little frayed around the edges, everything was spotless, the towels were soft and fluffy and the staff was friendly. The highlight was the complimentary full breakfast, served (not a buffet) with generous and plentiful choices and free refills on coffee and juice. A pleasant start to the rest of our day!

This was just a stopover on a trip to Delaware from Ohio. The hotel had a special rate of $75 with tax so we took advantage . One of the cool amenities was the cocktail hour, you got a coupon for free drink for $1.00 ! Also included was a hot breakfast from a menu! The staff was extremely friendly, close to the canal towpath for biking or walking, free parking .

Mary Grace,
You have far too much ENERGY...drive for hours, tour mansions, eat out and still have time to review the hotel. Thank you for your kind words. Please come see us again.
