“Good for the price”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 22, 2008

There is a reason the price is low.

The place was clean, although a slight musty smell in the bathroom which went away after I turned on the air conditioner. Room safe didn't work (there was a low battery message) the bolt lock didn't work, it looked like someone had put a plate in the door jam that was slightly out of place.

It was a non-smoking hotel, however, the stairwell reeked of smoke, Saturday afternoon there was a pair of undershorts in the hallway near the stairwell.

Morning breakfast was good, juices, pastries, waffles and juices.

Shuttle van runs in mornings and late afternoon.

It's worth the low price.

What this hotel lacks in Quality, it makes up for in awfulness. There simply aren't words to adequately convey just how truly awful the awfulness is. Now don't get me wrong -- I'm no hotel snob. I've driven cross-country numerous times and stayed in some pretty shady places that wound up being wonderful experiences -- the old Blue Bird Motel in Tucumcari, New Mexico, for example.

But the awfulness here is just so spectacularly awful that run-of-the-mill, everyday, ordinary awful hotels and motels can only dream of achieving such heights (depths?) of awful-tude.

Let's start with the "Tower." At some point, this motel was just a high rise. It is filthy. The rooms are "decorated" -- if that word can even be applied in this context -- in the most godawful blend of Salvation Army chic shag carpet and who-knows-what-they-were-thinking wallpaper. Everything is an afterthought, but at least the rooms offer you plenty of noise from Baltimore Ave.

Then the "suites." I don't know if there are, in fact, trillions of bugs in this room, but my skin crawls being in it. The sheets -- the clean ones -- are nicely appointed with leftover stains from someone else's bodily fluids. The "comfy chairs" are spectacularly stained as well -- and with what I simply don't want to guess. I plugged in my cell phone to charge it, and the television went out. One of the lamps disintegrated in my hands when went to turn the bulb on. I'm afraid to touch anything without a massive bottle of hand sanitizer immediately nearby.

But it gets better. The corridor outside the room is covered -- covered -- in bird droppings, because dozens of birds use the overhead on the second floor of the 2-story "suite" building to perch upon. Step outside and step into a pile of bird guano -- goooooood morning!

The fridge, the microwave, the WiFi -- these are nowhere near payoff enough to justify this place, especially when I'm going to pay several hundred dollars for the privilege. So why stay? Because the nicer College Park hotel is booked, and the rest appear to be even worse.

Now to their credit, the staff are friendly. They try hard. But nothing, nothing, can overcome the sheer, utter, pantheon of awfulness that is this hotel.

  • Liked — The roof didn't leak (but then again, it didn't rain)
  • Disliked — The accommodation.

Wow, where to begin!

Dead spiders on the bed, blood stain on the mattress, bugs crawling across the ceiling, the caving in ceiling.

Not to mention, there was a prostitue tap, tap, tapping on my door at 6:30 AM.. which, I didn't order - or hire for that matter.

A dial-up modem connected to a router does not qualify as Wi-Fi. There's College Perk down the road with Free Wi-Fi, if you intend on checking email during your stay here.

To go into further detail of how bad the conditions were, one of our companions had urine on the toilet seat. Another colleague was bitten by bedbugs, and I havent showered in 2 days becdause of the hair left in the shower.

And finally our rooms had two beds a full bed an twin bed, I have never seen a room for 3 ever in my life.

Quality "inn" price - yes. Quality "inn" comfort - negative ghost rider.

I hope the state department comes in and does an evaluation of the entire property. Quality no more!

Here goes ... The room very filthy (sticky goo on the TV screen and the nightstand ... This is basic stuff to clean). I had to keep the window open all night to survive the stench. And the bedding! Oy ... The place is so gross you wish you had brought your own blanket to protect yourself. I dared to walk on the carpet in white socks, which were black in minutes.

The lights, TV remote and Internet all didn't work (I was told that only the manger could reset the wireless system, and he wouldn't be in until 10:30 the next morning!!! Never mind if any guest had actual work to do!)

The three times I asked about the shuttle, I was told it would "be a while." The staff was either clueless or surly. When I asked about the airport shuttle, one guy at the front desk told me the only option he knew about was his friend, who would drive me to Dulles for $70.

It's a shame because the location is excellent. It really is a lovely 10-minute walk to the metro, which gets you downtown in 20 minutes, And there are lots of amenities in this nice college town. It's a good strategy for the budget traveler to DC to stay in College Park -- Just avoid this place at all costs!!

Pro: service was 3-4 stars. Very polite, offered suggestions, tried as best as they could to manage as many groups as there were. A slight walk to metro but very safe neighborhood en route. Few places to eat nearby, just below the UMD campus which is walking distance.

Con: houskeeping needs to be retrained in basic sanitation. That is, when the towels are left on the floor, that means they need to be replaced with CLEAN ones, not the same ones on the floor! Bedbugs were prominent everywhere as a few of our colleagues were bitten in varying degrees by the buggers - some a LOT worse than others.

Overall the hotel would truly live up to it's name if they renovated extensively and sanitized the place. It's not the healthiest place to be, especially with young ones around. Not sure about some of these other positive reviews but trust me on this one: stay at the Comfort Inn or UMUC Marriott; you know what you're paying for!

  • Liked — Close proximity to UMD College Park and metro access
  • Disliked — Lack of sanitation and hygiene and rampant bedbugs problem!

I booked 4 rooms through Hotels.com. When we arrived, there was only one room reserved. One room we had obtained after being in the lobby for 2 hours was smoking when we wanted non-smoking. That room had a bullet hole in the window. That should have been fixed.

The rooms were below average for looks---the carpet was dirty, the tile on the floor clean, but needed to be replaced. The tub was old. There wasn't enough towels for the guests. Even our room for two people on some days received one fresh set of towels.

The staff however was very nice and willing to make things right.

We thought since it was a "drive" to DC that was why the price was ecomonical, however, you get what you pay for....we should have had a better motel.

In hotels I care mostly about clean and quiet, and this one fit the bill.

Quality Inn is the closest lodging to the College Park Metro (rail) station, an 11-minute walk. Lots of fast food and some sit-down dining within a block. U of Maryland is a couple hundred yards.

My small, single room was clean and about average for a motel. Staff upon check-in was just marking time; upon check-out the guy seemed really interested in my only complaint, which was more of an observation: the pigeons roosting outside the rooms would not let me sleep past 7:00 a.m.

The free breakfast was no better than the other ones I've seen over the years: all carbs, brought in boxes from somewhere else. I skipped it and went to Starbucks a block away.

I booked through the Southwest Airlines website and got an $83 rate - best deal I could find for a hotel near College Park.
