“Its always a pleasure to return...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

As a local I have had several meals here... but by no means a regular...... I have never stayed overnight; no need to; I live just down the road.... All the meals have been excellent, good value for money... We visited recently with friends.. It was a busy evening; we hadn't booked but we were found a corner in the bar area which was quite acceptable... Each of us enjoyed our meal, perfectly cooked with a good choice from the menu... Really, we could not fault it.. Nice variety of wines, staff were friendly and helpful... We would highly recommend to others.

This was a lovely pub with very nice gardens. The staff were all very helpful.
We had a lovely room and bathroom. It looked as if it had been recently upgraded.
Food was excellent, had only one course as this was more than ample.
I would definitely stay here again. Very good value.

Room Tip: We had Room 9 which was lovely.

We had visited the White Hart for dinner on probably four previous occasions over the last year and found the food and service to be very good. This time however, it started badly when I ordered a bernaise sauce only to be told they had no eggs! Overall, the food was really disapointing. The pork was extremely fatty and tough and had to be sent back. We chose fish and chips instead as a quicker option, However, when these arrived, the chips were barely cooked and the fish was extremely oily on the outside and very wet on the inside. To be fair, the staff were very apologetic and the manager came over as well. We were not charged for the food were were unhappy about and were offered free deserts as well.
My parents stayed overnight at The White Hart and found the room to be comfortable, clean and well presented.

We thought we should just add a note to your review to explain that, in short, we tripped over ourselves trying to put right the first mistake. (The pork! No-one recognises the “eggs” comment because we’ve always got dozens and the supplier is only 50 metres from our front door, if we ever did run out). We tried to be really quick and made things worse. Sorry! Once again, our apologies.

We stayed at The White Hart Inn in Hampstead Marshall for one night (August 2012) in a double room.

Pros...
Easy to find (with a sat nav) convenient location with plenty of parking. About a 10 minute drive into Newbury / 15 minute drive to Highclere Castle (which was the purpose of our visit!)
We had a welcoming and speedy greeting, shown over to our room (which was ready when we arrived just after 2pm). The staff were all friendly and accommodating throughout our stay.
The bedroom was lovely - recently renovated, spacious, clean, comfortable bed, all the usual facilities (tv, tea/coffee making etc).
The pub itself has also recently been renovated and was very welcoming.
The food we had in the evening was very tasty although perhaps edging slightly on the pricey side (small portions), especially the desserts.
Breakfast (included in the b&b price) - we had full english (although alternatives were also offered) - all cooked fresh and set us up well for the day ahead. Very attentive service at breakfast.
Drinks - usual independent country pub prices and good variety.
Sizeable beer garden too for enjoying a few drinks outside!

Negatives...
Well not many to be fair...this really is a nice little pub and it does lots of things very well.
The bathroom for us let the place down the most - not sure whether our bathroom was typical of the other 7 guest rooms, but it was far below the standard achieved in the bedroom and the rest of the pub...the bathroom was quite old-fashioned, tired looking bath, toilet and sink, and walls looked like they had just had a quick paint job. A shame because the bedroom was so nice. The shower was also just a quick hook up to the bath taps and it was impossible to regulate the temperature of the water...either freezing cold or scalding hot!
Unfortunately the occupants of the bedroom above us had rather loud nocturnal activities ;) - you could hear everything!!!...not sure whether it was because it was an old building or they were just very loud (probably a combination of both!). Although I wouldn't judge the b&b on this and I'm not sure they could have done anything to prevent this in any case...this was just unfortunate that they were staying the same night as we were I think!

All in all...a nice little b&b. We probably won't stay again, just because we have visited the area now and we don't really have a need to go back. Having said this, we would recommend The White Hart Inn to family and friends as a good alternative from staying in central Newbury. A pleasant stay!

Thank you for reviewing your stay with us. We are delighted that you enjoyed our country inn.

We are working on the points you raise (although the bathrooms in most of the rooms are absolutely brand new!) but our quiet location does mean you can hear other guests in the early morning.

We hope that you do decide to come again!

I can only comment on the food here - I did not stay - but it really was quite awful. My partner and I came in on a Saturday night, around 8pm, when you might expect to see a place buzzing - there were two cars in the car park, which in hindsight, should've been warning enough. However, we were keen to try it out so went ahead and ordered what turned out to be 2 of the worst dishes we've eaten in a long while. Fish and chips (how bad can it be, right?) was a plate of totally soggy, dark brown chips in a lump, with a barely cooked (from frozen I must assume) piece of fish on top, that was watery in the middle. I had 'smoked haddock and spring onion fishcakes' which were 2 great weights of mostly potato, with some 'white fish' and aniseedy taste through them and raw bits of spring onion. However, the crowning glory had to be the 'juliened' veg that was the companion to this dish - thick chunks of completely plain and tasteless swede (!?) and carrot, with a few green beans. When we were asked what was wrong with the food we had left on our plates, there was unfortunately not much they could say in defence of it, though they graciously took 15% off the bill, and offered dessert on the house (um, enough bad food for one evening, thanks all the same)
The staff were lovely, sweet and helpful. But the food was really, really BAD. Shame.

Oh dear! It seems as if everything went wrong.

We aim to provide the very best of the country inn experience – great food, drink and accommodation – and all our food is freshly cooked from base ingredients, emphasising locally-sourced, seasonal and free range produce. (No frozen stuff!) You can see your dishes being prepared from many tables through the glass arches.

My apologies that your meal was nowhere near to standard. If you wish to give me a call personally, I will make a plan with you to put things right – ask for me at the pub.

As title says. Setting is lovely, gardens around inn very well maintained, off the beaten track which suits us fine. Very warm welcome, staff friendly and attentive. Bar and dining areas very clean and cosy. Not hard to imagine yourself there on a cold night, fire going, drink in hand. We stayed a Friday night and were quite surprised not to see the place buzzing. We booked in at tea time, had quick drink, took the kids for pizza into Newbury and then returned for our meal. Hubby had chicken & chorizo egg fettucine and I opted for the duck special. Both arrived, piping hot plates ( as it should be ), food hot and very delicious. We also had some desserts, brioche with ice cream and the apple, rhubarb & cinnamon crumble with custard, two pints of cider were also consumed. Bill £42 approximately. I thought that was okay, not cheap, not expensive, just on the money. Room fine, clean. Breakfast lovely. Shame there wasn't much business there for a Friday night, hope it stays open as we do want to stay again and visit Highclere!! Guy at bar really nice and looked after us very well. Can't fault the place.

My stay was arranged by a colleague to have me enjoy rural England for one night of my stay. The location is very rural! (WIFI in room worked well - your cell phone won't unless you're outside) The single room I had was very small, up-to-date and a full bath is included and its' small size would not have been any concern for me had it been properly cleaned. Room was not dirty per se, but the bed linens were not fresh (wrinkled from another guests' night rest) and the carpet really should have been vaccumed. Bath area was fresh.
The restaurant was FANTASTIC and made up for the disappointing room. Very high quality food, you can see the chef working in a very up-to-date kitchen, very good waitstaff and even the included breakfast the next morning was all freshly made.

I'll give them a pass on the room cleanliness, I enjoyed everything else about the White Hart Inn.

Room Tip: Try and upgrade to a larger room - but don't miss out on the food!

Thank you for providing us with your review. As the owner, I am delighted that you enjoyed so much of your stay but horrified that there appears to have been an error with your bed linen. I can only apologise for this shortfall. It is our aim that the whole of the customer experience - food, drink AND accommodation – should be fantastic. I hope you will us the benefit of the doubt for a future occasion and give us the opportunity of welcoming you back to The White Hart Inn.
