“New management need to listen.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2013

My family and I have been visiting this quintessentially English and beautiful pub for more than 25 years, always adored the food, and it was always packed out and busy with just the best feeling when you walked in. It underwent refurbishment and new management between September 2011 and May 2012 and they have totally bulldozed the atmosphere. We have visited about times throughout the course of the year since and every experience has been awful. The staff, wonderfully attentive and sweet, were all obviously untrained, and didn't know a lot of the answers to questions we asked. The new management (with the exception of Claire) are awful, and don't seem to give a toss about what life used to be like before the group took over (Hillbrooke Hotels I believe) this place is a pub with an identity crisis. It is NOT supposed to be a hotel, not designed to be, and it doesn't work properly. Food and drink is suddenly disgustingly expensive and poor quality so no value for money! We used to sit in the public bar with our dog, so always chatted with local people, and it just seems that the Hotel group is just doing what it wants not what always worked for the village and people like myself who always came for good pub food and a lovely garden to sit in, and maybe a cosy fire to sit by in cold weather! The sooner the pub gets back to normal the better. I will not be returning. There is nothing attractive about a visit here any more, the staff from Hillbrooke are so unconcerned with people it is disgusting. Put it back to the way it was and you might get some more customers.

Room Tip: If you have been here before september 2011 and loved it, don't be disappointed and just stay aw...

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments - we really appreciate your feedback. I see you last visited us in June 2012, I would be happy to talk you through the changes since then and discuss your thoughts in more detail. Please do feel free to call the pub or drop in and ask for me (I can't add my contact details here). I sincerely hope to hear from you as The Stag & Huntsman pub is very much a part of the local community and the team is very passionate about its role in the village. I look forward to hearing from you.

We have just had two nights here for our wedding anniversary and we had a wonderful time. Very comfortable bedroom and spacious bathroom with everything you need. Food, especially the a large carte was of a high quality although my husband was a little disappointed by the selection of 'nightcaps' i.e whisky's. Highly recommended and next time we will take our pooch! Thank you

Thank you for such a lovely review. I will definitely look into enhancing the range of whisky we stock at The Stag & Huntsman and see what might be possible. We look forward to welcoming you – and your pooch! – again soon.
Kind regards

A charming small hotel in a delightful location. Friendly and relaxed, yet spotlessly clean and efficient, the staff could not have been more helpful. The beautifully decorated room was warm, comfortable and well appointed. Having stayed three nights, every breakfast and each evening meal was excellent, a very enjoyable stay and would highly recommend.

Since the renovations we have found that service to get drinks has been very slow. The menu has improved but kids portions are small and a bit expensive. Very limited choice for vegetarians and I was unhappy with the quality of my curry.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I am very sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your experience with us and I will look into your concerns regarding the drink service further. I see that you had the curry which was taken off of the menu at the end of February when our new head chef started. In light of this I do hope we may be able to tempt you back in the near future.

Dating back to 1015, Hambleden is one of the most perfectly preserved English villages you'll ever find. Beseiged as a TV location for the likes of Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang; 101 Dalmations and Band of Brothers - it is an idyllic part of the Chiltern landscape. You could throw a sackful of superlatives at it and probably be still found wanting.

The sad fact though, is unless you know exactly where it is you'll drive straight past it, as it's situated off a B road from Skirmett to Henley on Thames, meandering in a sort of distorted semi-circular road. Consisting of a charming collection of flint and brick cottages huddling around a village pump, chestnut tree and 14C Church, it has a shop, garage, butchers and even a flourishing community centre with a bar.

The Stag and Huntsman completes the modest array of ammenities available to the 800 strong residents and does it admirably. The 3 bars all have their own characters, the cutest being the tiny front bar, lurking behind a red velvet curtain in the passageway as you enter. The Stag is well stocked for a village pub - 3 real ales on handpull including "Rebellion" from nearby Marlow Brewery, 2 draught continental lagers including Budvar and a generous wine list. The pub was fairly busy on a drizzly Wednesday night with mainly diners and the food looked good but not spectacular gastro fayre, but hey - sometimes you don't want posh grub, and this looked good comfort food. There's a huge garden at the rear that is obviously host to more than a few Barbies judging by the layout and purpose built serving hatch from the main bar. There is a cavernous car park at the side of the pub.

Pubs like this are what gives England its unique character, it is the hub of a community, the glue that binds the social infrastructure. Villages that loose their pubs loose a part of their soul. My Dutch work colleague marvelled at it all and commented that you could not get this anywhere else in the civilised world. We are all too eager to criticise and be too self-effacing in the UK - and yet just 41 miles from The Houses of Parliament is a precious stone that makes this scepter'd isle what it is...

We have just spent three fabulous nights at The Stag and Huntsman. The rooms were spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated, warm & very comfortable. All of the staff were very welcoming and made us feel very special, nothing was too much trouble for them. The food at breakfast and also the evening meal was excellent with a wide variety on the menu. We were spoilt for choice!
The hotel is ideally situated in a small hamlet, in a beautiful area, with plenty of interesting places to visit. There is also lots of wild life to see and plenty of fantastic walks. We would highly recommend the Stag and Huntsman Hotel to anyone, hopefully we will be returning very soon.

Room Tip: All rooms very high standard.

Just returned from a 3 night stay at this charming property. The rooms were spotlessly clean, warm and comfortable. When we stayed all the rooms were full, and the staff still managed to make you were feel you were the only person they had to deal with - being charming and helpful throughout. The food was excellent, well cooked and beautifully presented and offered a good choice both from the bar menu and a la carte. The area offers many different ways of spending time, with great walking and wildlife spotting opportunities. In all - a relaxing place where you can enjoy your time away and be well looked after. Would recommend it thoroughly.
