“Lucky find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2013

We decided to go for a walk in the countryside and to hopefully find somewhere nice to have dinner in the evening to celebrate our wedding anniversary. On searching the Internet around Henley we found a pub we thought would we would like to try, but on enquiring we found they were fully booked. We made our way towards Henley anyway and stopped off at The Cherry Tree in Stoke Row for a drink and a spot of lunch before our walk. The staff were all very friendly and the sharing platter we chose for lunch delicious. After looking at their dinner menu we decided to book a table for the evening too. We continued on our way and after completing our walk, visited Henley before returning in the evening to The Cherry Tree for dinner. We very rarely manage more than one course but the food was so good that we both had all three courses. We couldn't fault anything and both agreed that the meal was the best we have had for some time. The prices we thought were very reasonable especially compared with the other local establishments. We shall not hesitate to return when we are next in the area.

We stayed here overnight (B&B) for about £85. The pub is a really attractive old place, interesting both on the outside and inside. The rooms are in a separate building a step or two to the left of the pub. The rooms are excellent standard - more like a good hotel. There was every comfort. Our only problem was that we found it too hot (there was frost on the ground so an error in the right direction). The heating controls were not as responsive as we would have liked. We had a good evening meal in the pub and an equally good breakfast in the morning. Certainly to be recommended. The garden and surroundings make the place well worth visiting in summer too.

Stayed here early July, for the Henley Regatta - at first we were disappointed as it was a bit far out of the centre of Henley but soon changed our minds. It was a great place to unwind, kick back and relax. The food was excellent and our hosts were lovely - Vicky made sure we always had a table for dinner and took a genuine interest in making sure we were enjoying our stay. Our room was fine, we slept very well. We could basically have whatever we wanted for breakfast, cooked continental. I know the chef put a lot of thought into his menus - I loved his fish dishes. We stayed for 5 nights and I actually was a bit tearful when we had to say our goodbyes - we will be back, for sure!

This place is a hidden gem close to Henley on Thames, Fantastic accomodation, very friendly owners who cant do enough for you, and the food is exceptional. I would recommend this hotel for a chilling stay and, you probably wont want to leave the room, Love it and will return.

The Cherry Tree used to be one of our favourite places to eat in the area. Family had stayed there and spoke very highly of it. We had tried it a couple of times since it changed hands last year and had been a bit disappointed by what we thought was a rather limited menu, although the food had been good. This week, I returned with a group of friends, having heard positive reports about it. It was a dreadful experience. Although our waitress was lovely (and we have no complaints about her whatsoever), it really did seem to us that the Chef could not have been around and someone else (unskilled in the kitchen!) was standing in. We sat outside - the location is gorgeous, but the furniture was, quite literally, falling apart and extremely shabby. The menu was, again, uninspiring and the 5 of us struggled to find anything that we really wanted. We decided to go for the fish, which the menu stated was fresh daily. When we asked about it, there was no fish. I had a Caesar Salad, which was ok for a bag of salad and a few croutons and anchovies, but one of the group ordered the burger. It was so chargrilled that it looked like a lump of coal on the plate - and the peculiar relish alongside it looked a bit like scrambled egg. The waitress did take it away as soon as it was pointed out to her, no questions asked (and did not charge for it - again unprompted), but even the replacement wasn't very appetising. For dessert, I ordered creme brûlée - it was not properly cooked and, under the crispy topping, was liquid and inedible. We were there to celebrate a friend's birthday so did not want to make too much of a fuss, but unfortunately it did not live up to expectations. It is not pleasant to write so negatively about a once- loved venue, but really something was very wrong on that evening, and, sadly, we will not be returning.

Clearly: Henley is NOT a footwalk away (whereby I assume that an eight mile’s walk is not a foot walk in the normal sense. Which may however be accessed within ten minutes by car). But this is no big deal as the place is great by itself. A great village setting, peaceful and quiet, with a huge premise located on.
Not only the whole set-up is great in general, so is the garden area as well as the inside. While the front garden provides ample space to sit under some shady trees (which are still growing) the inside is nicely decorated with great taste (pls refer to separate comments on pub and restaurant). And so are the rooms inside an old barn: very modern but nonetheless cozy. Beds are very good, and so are the bathrooms.
Ample parking.

Room Tip: all rooms are good

We arrived on a hot Sunday afternoon, the place was very busy, outside and inside. We were given our key and taken to our room. The room was lovely,a nice big bed and the shower was great. The staff were all very helpful and very friendly. The setting of the pub is quite stunning ,the wisteria was out in flower and there were nice flowers by the bed rooms. We stayed for two nights and the food was good, but we did feel it was a bit expensive. We shared a cheese board which was very nice but tiny pieces of cheese, not value for money.Breakfast was very very good, served
by very friendly staff.

Room Tip: Only four bedrooms,we stayed in the Plum room.

Beautiful pub/inn/restaurant in Stoke Row, in the heart of the South Oxfordshire countryside in the Chiltern Hills. Elegant, chic design gives a warm, inviting feeling and the overall ethos of The Cherry Tree is one of comfort, enjoyment and relaxation. Food is key here with bi monthly menu changes of seasonal produce. Well kept beers, fantastic wines and great champagnes make this a place for a weekend away with a loved one, catch up with friends or equally happy catering for corporate groups. Likewise, it is a wonderful local pub in a beautiful Oxfordshire village. Four en-suite letting rooms in the barn are fresh, crisp, elegant and clean and most comfortable. Overall, a wonderful experience and not to be missed if in this part of the country. There is a definite air of class about this place and the London set flock to it in droves for a great country fix. ... more   less
