“nice pleasant stay and food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2012

I was there last weekend. The rooms are very nice and clean. I had their sunday roast and it was really tasty. The service at the restaurant was good and the staff was friendly.

The website still exists however the pub closed on Christmas day,
The owners trained me, and looked after me for a few years and I have nothing but good things to say of them, the food and the customers, I only feel regret that now its gone people in the papers and in website want to slag it off,

Cheers Richard and Paul

We still cannot believe what happened. We booked a room for New Year's eve back in November. Turned up around 7pm that night to find the pub in darkness and no response from within or by phone. We had no phone call - nothing to forewarn us that this would happen. Needless to say we had to make alternative arrangements but given this appalling experience cannot recommend this establishment to anyone

To all past & future customers, we would like to take this opportunity to say that The Cherry Tree Inn at Stoke Row is now under new ownership since February & reopened two weeks ago having undergone a complete refurbishment & total transformation. It is now clean, professional & already garnering a name for itself with a fantastic new chef & team. We would ask that all those disappointed customers have a look at the new UK version of the website, as the old one is not representative of Cherry Tree anymore. There are four luxury en suite letting rooms, there is a wonderful bar for enjoying a local ale, chilled glass of knowledgeably chosen wine or even a glass of fizz. The restaurant is warm, inviting & beautifully designed. This is a very different outfit from the last 8 year tenure & we are sure you will enjoy it. Please disregard any of the comments previously associated with The Cherry Tree as it has a new lease of life. Thank you & we look forward to welcoming you very soon. Call the Cherry Tree today to get our new web address & contact details. We are still awaiting Trip Advisor to update our contact details in the meantime.

My fiancee chose this establishment for us to enjoy a rare Friday off work lunch, and we weren't disappointed.

We both had the soup to start - Parsnip soup with chestnuts, parsnip crisps and truffle oil. It was so good I'be doing this for our Christmas dinner starter!

My fiancee had a wild mushroom spaghetti pasta as a main and I had fish and chips - both excellent.

Service was friendly and the music was just the right level - a great selection of old and new tunes. We'll be back!

We stopped here for a night in the hopes of a pleasant break to our howeward journey
Having specifically booked one room, we were quite surprised to be told that we had been "put in" another room owing to problems with the central heating.

As it turned out, the central heating was the tip of the iceberg. There were a number of issues relating to a lack of basic maintenance which resulted in an almost entirely sleepless night:

• Blown bulb in one bedside lamp. We mentioned this at the bar but nothing was done.
• Extractor fan in the bathroom not working.
• Absent shower handle, making the shower unusable.
• No bin liners present – a hygiene issue.
• A leaky bath plug (sealant needed around the metal flange). Thus impossible to keep the bath full.
• Tea/coffee box in a tatty state.

and as if these weren't enough in an inn boasting FOUR AA stars:

• A very, very uncomfortable mattress. This clearly needed replacing.
• A rodent gnawing behind the skirting board!

The following morning we simply packed up and left without stopping for breakfast. We were exhausted and badly in need of a proper shower or bath but could get neither in our room, so decided to get home as soon as we could.

Within a few days, we e-mailed our complaint to the management of the Cherry Tree Inn, but now nearly a month later have heard nothing back.

Not recommended.

Room Tip: Don't bother!

We booked the meal Groupon offer (2 x 2 course meals including a glass of wine each for £25), food was OK but no vegetarian starter and only one vegetarian main course. As I eat very little meat or fish this was not much choice for me.

My partner ordered the 12 oz rib eye steak on my advice as I knew from the groupon offer terms that the 16 oz steak would carry a £3.50 surcharge. We also ordered 2 extra glasses of wine which my partner paid for. I later found out that he had been charged the £3.50 surcharge even though he had the smaller steak. He had also been charged a whopping £5.90 a glass for the wine - 250 ml glasses of Grenache-Merlot - which is currently listed at £4.90 a glass on their website. We won't be going back!

We booked the meal Groupon offer (2 * 2 course meal including a glass of wine for £25), and because the area itself looked nice we also decided to book an overnight stay. This was £95 for a room including breakfast. We booked the "Plum Room" using their website.

On arrival the staff were expecting us and had our lunch, dinner and room reservation info available, and were extremely friendly and helpful. Attentive service through lunch and the food was delicious - we eat out regularly and it was a high quality menu. I had leek and blue cheese tart to start, followed by Seabass. My partner had asparagus and serrano ham to start, followed by a squid and chorizo salad. We ordered a side portion of courgette frites which were fab!
All portions were good size, beautifully cooked.

When checking in, we were put into Walnut instead of Plum. We were told this was due to a wine spillage on the carpet of Plum, but that there was no difference in quality.
The room was a nice size, the bed comfortable and all clean. Plenty of tea, coffee, muffins, water in the room which was nice.
Also free Wi-Fi was included which was a nice touch - reception is pretty low, but usable.
The only (small) downsides were a) the room did not have a flat screen TV which the Plum room was advertised as having and b) the Walnut room is directly opposite the kitchen. So there is noise into the night as they deal with the food orders. Unfortunately as the room was quite hot we needed the windows open and could hear all the kitchen noise until quite late.

Still, not enough to ruin our stay - we will next time just insist on the room we booked (which is at the other end of the row of rooms and so away from the kitchen noise).

The pub location is excellent for taking a walk into the The Chilterns area - we did a 5.6 miles walk which started from the pub and got to see some wonderful countryside, so is a great anchor point for exploring.

Something to be aware of re the location - phone reception is ZERO in the pub itself and most of the rooms - you need to be in the car park to send/receive or make calls. Not a fault of the pub but if you are waiting for an important call.....

In summary - excellent food, great service, a nice overnight stay. We will visit again if we are in the area.

Room Tip: Insist on the Plum room and avoid Walnut, as it is opposite the Kitchen

Beautiful pub/inn/restaurant in Stoke Row, in the heart of the South Oxfordshire countryside in the Chiltern Hills. Elegant, chic design gives a warm, inviting feeling and the overall ethos of The Cherry Tree is one of comfort, enjoyment and relaxation. Food is key here with bi monthly menu changes of seasonal produce. Well kept beers, fantastic wines and great champagnes make this a place for a weekend away with a loved one, catch up with friends or equally happy catering for corporate groups. Likewise, it is a wonderful local pub in a beautiful Oxfordshire village. Four en-suite letting rooms in the barn are fresh, crisp, elegant and clean and most comfortable. Overall, a wonderful experience and not to be missed if in this part of the country. There is a definite air of class about this place and the London set flock to it in droves for a great country fix. ... more   less
