“A pleasant oceanside hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2005

My husband and I had a relaxing stay at the Chesapeake Resort and Spa Hotel this past Labor Day weekend. Our 4th floor Waterview King, Non-Smoking room did indeed provide a waterfront view from the balcony. Note that rooms on a given floor with higher numbers (i.e., 420 vs. 406) will be "closer" to the waterfront area. I agree with the previous review that this is not a true "resort," but more like a hotel with good housekeeping and some amenities (I highly recommend the spa). Unfortunately, there is no beach, and the small indoor pool was cold because the heater had not yet been fixed. There are 3 restaurants on site; the Boardwalk Cafe has great outdoor seating but terrible table service and will charge you for refills on small cups of iced tea. There is a basic free breakfast (cereal, donuts, juice, coffee) in the mornings in the lobby. If you like fishing, there are chartered boat options available on-site. Also, you can rent kayaks for exploring a lovely creek which flows out into the Bay at the nearby BayPaddlers, across the street. Overall, this is a pleasant hotel on the Chesapeake Bay, located between other quiet shore towns like North Beach and Solomons Island further south.

My wife and I were looking forward to enjoying a long romantic weekend away in the chesapeake bay area. This hotel is certainly dated and the name and website give the appearance of being a beach resort. There is no beach to lay out on and the "indoor" pool was closed throughout our stay. The gas fireplace in our "suite" was broken and the jacuzzi was dirty as well! In fact, there were broken lamp fixtures and sconces in the hallways. The spa was booked 1 week before we arrived and this was AFTER we were told to call a week before we came because we originally called a month beforehand! Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be many other options in the area for a hotel that is geared more towards luxury. There is a very nice restaurant called "Smokey Bones" that has a great, cheap breakfast and pretty good BBQ but there are better restaurants in the area. The place down the road in North Beach is called Herrington Harbor Marina which has smaller, motel-like rooms but has a much nicer ambiance, pool (Olympic size and outdoor), restaurant (Mangos), boat docks and resort feel to it. I wish someone had told me to stay there instead. All in all the area is nice to see but I wouldn't head back anytime soon. The ocean is across the bridge and probably a better bet.
