I stayed at the Residence Inn Bethesda for 11 days during a recent conference nearby and I was very satisfied with the accomodations and the level of service. Residence Inn is neither slick nor trendy. However, it is very comfortable in an understated way. The chain's name really fits this establishment since the best description would, in fact, be "residential." Think of this hotel like a very nice apartment building in a great location.
As a Marriott Silver Elite member, I was given a corner suite, which has a more spacious layout. It was nice to have a working kitchen available in the suite (though I hardly used it). The separate living and bedroom would be ideal for families wanting privacy. The room looks like it was recently updated and was immaculate. Again, not posh, but very clean, comfortable and functional and tastefully decorated with modern furnishings. My one complaint in the room was that the wifi connection was painfully slow at times (but it was free). Marriott might want to consider another ISP beside IBahn.
A word about the breakfast: it was sufficent and had enough variety but the food quality could be better. The same is true for the evening reception. Mind you, I am not complaining but keep your expectations in check (don't expect gourmet).
The best part of my staff was the staff who very always friendly and helpful. The front desk staff, though often busy, made sure that all my requests were addressed efficiently. The maids always said hello and were smiling and the buffet staff always said "good morning, sir." Little things, yes, but other places I've stayed at did not have those courtesies. It is the little things that can make a difference - especially for an extended stay.
While I would recommend this hotel without reservation due to the spacious accomodations and excellent staff, the lobby area and "gatehouse" where the breakfast and evening reception are served, could use a makeover. The rugs and furniture in the common areas are starting to become dated. I bring this up only because the Hilton Garden Inn across the street is a "slick" and modern hotel and may be more appealing to some. While I happen to think that the Residence Inn is a much better value due to the two-room suites, free wi-fi, and free breakfast, there is a lot of competition in the area so a makeover would make it even more compelling.
