“Clean, comfortable room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2014

This Marriott suited our needs quite well. My husband and I were in town for my grandparents' birthday party in Bethesda, and the whole extended family stayed at this hotel. The rooms were clean, though the color scheme was a bit wild. The bathroom in our 3rd floor room was TINY, but the shower was fabulous (great water pressure and generously sized shower head).

There was a nice restaurant on the ground floor where all of the grandchildren met for a gathering one evening. We also ate at the breakfast buffet since it was included in our room charge, and it was great! We paid the $4 to upgrade to the omelet and waffle station, and it was well worth the cost. The food from that station was particularly delicious and the person who attended the station could not have been nicer--she made our morning!

We utilized the free shuttle to the Medical Center Metro station, which was a nice perk. It ran every 30-minutes (which was fine when you were going to the Metro but a bit less convenient when going from the Metro to the hotel, when you have less control over your arrival time). We'd definitely stay here again if traveling to Bethesda. It's a bit far away from downtown DC, so we likely would not stay here if downtown DC was the only planned destination.

Let me start with what we liked. This is a hotel in Bethesda, MD, conveniently located off the I-270 and I-495 highway on the North of Washington DC. Very reasonably priced for the area. If you want to visit DC, they offer free shuttle service every half hour to the Medical Center train station. However, keep in mind that each one way ticket costs $3.75 (off peak hour), so with 2 adults+2 kids the round trip costs $30. Parking downtown is cheaper ($15-$17), especially in the weekends. Parking, breakfast and wireless internet are available for a price, but the hotel makes package offers. Wireless internet is free in the lobby. The rooms are generally clean, but the hotel started showing signs of age. The air-conditioning was a bit noisy and the thermostat did not seem to work all that much (it kept heating the room). There is a swimming pool, but it's pretty shallow and small. The kids will certainly enjoy it. What strike us though is the lack of amenities in the rooms, quite unlike other Marriott hotels we stayed. Our room (two queen beds) did not have a mini-bar, couch, or safe. The personnel at the reception and at the bar/breakfast were really very friendly and accommodating. So, putting together all the pros and cons we will probably stay there again given the opportunity.

Dear family_travel66,

Thank you very much for your review of our hotel. While it is never our intention to disappoint a guest in any way, it appears that we did not live up to your expectations for Marriott's high standards of hospitality and for this we are truly sorry. Each Marriott hotel does differ in some ways regarding in-room amenities depending upon the set up of the guestrooms and the space available. We do hope that the friendliness of our associates did in some way make up for what you perceived to be lacking.

The "Pooks Hill" Marriot is a great place to stay for anyone faced with the sometimes unpleasant task of long term commitments to either NIH or Walter Reid. My wife and I found that Pooks Hill staff and accommodations are top shelf despite other reviewers complaints of aging facilities. Their shuttle service is wonderful and can get you to either the Metro, hospitals or out to eat quickly and efficiently. Everything is kept clean comfortable and fresh. Staff are always pleased to help in anyway they can and will, if necessary, go the extra mile. I don't know if they realize the dire straits some folks are in especially long term clinical patients like ourselves but they certainly do provide a high level of comfort, care and reliability at this hotel. Thanks

Room Tip: Much quieter than the downtown Bethesda site most rooms are nice overlooking the pool is especially...

Lots of places to eat around this hotel. Nice, clean and friendly place to stay. Metro is right across the street, get a pass and go anywhere in DC then come back to the hotel and get a great nights sleep.

You feel the class the minute you enter the hotel. Great ambience, wonderful staff. Rooms are cozy and quiet. TV's are nice, AC and heat is not piped to the outside. Showers have hot water almost immediately. The gym is well kept with water and headphone sets available. All running and ellipticals have TV piped into them and they all work.
The breakfast is wonderful and there is a cook making wonderful omelets to order. The buffet is well worth it but you may order off the menu as well.
The only downside is the average dinner. My steak was average and my friend's shrimp appetizer and bruschetta were also average.
There is a shuttle available to take you into quaint downtown Bethesda as well as NIH and Bethesda.
You can't beat this!

Noice hotel with good infrastructure for business meetings. Nice rooms, attentive staff. A shuttle to downtown or shopping centres is organized after 5pm, during the day you need a cab. Nothing do do/see nearby except some nice neighborhoods. Good location if you come by car, near to the high way and easy acces tot eh airport. Free WiFi in the lobby

We stayed here last month during the snowstorm. I would have been understanding if service was not up to par due to the circumstances, but that was not case at all. The staff was amazing and it was "business as usual", with even the shuttles running on schedule. I was so impressed (and thankful).

As others have stated, this is not a new hotel, but it is clean and well-maintained. The bathroom was small (even my pre-teen daughter noted that, so this could be a deal-breaker for a very large person) but that was the only negative about our room. It would be nice if wi-fi was included, though.

Our room was quiet and we slept well each night of our stay. We will definitely stay here again when we return to the area.
