“Not Up To Expectations.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2005

I stayed at the Hyatt in Bethesda for two nights in September. The hotel is easy to find and has parking in the garage under the hotel, although it costs $10 per night. The hotel has a newly added Mortons Steakhouse and another grill. Both are good, although the grill has very slow service. Room service for breakfast is very good and fast. So everything around the guest rooms is good and lives up to the Hyatt expectations. However, the guest rooms did not meet my expectations. Everything in them is old and out dated. The carpets are not necessarily dirty, but well used. The walls are scratched and torn in some places and the doors are scratch. The bathrooms again were not dirty, but were in serious need of repair. There was missing grout and caulking all over the shower. It looked like a bathroom from a cheap budget hotel. The bed was hard as a rock (not pillow-top) and the linens are not plush like in other business hotels. You are paying for location when staying at this hotel and not for the Hyatt experience. The hotel is situated directly on top of the Metro Red Line. They do charge $9.95 per night for wireless internet. So you can add an additional $20 to the room rates for internet and parking combined which is a little rediculous when paying the already high room rates. Try staying somewhere else that is within close walking distance to the metro station. There are plenty of other places to stay when visiting Bethesda or the NIH.

This place is clean like most Hyatt hotels. It is large and the location in Bethesda is very nice (about one or two blocks away from the Bethesda Metro stop).

Nothing else is special about it. You have to pay an extra fee for the wireless Internet service (which is not always fast enough). The rooms are ordinary with decor from the 1980s. I noticed a small stain on one of the towels in my room and it appeared to be dried blood. The large hotel has a huge skylight in the middle of its roof but it is still dark even during the middle of the day.

When I checked in, the man at the front desk was VISIBLY UNCOMFORTABLE when I presented my credit card to him. He was NOT satisfied with examining my U.S. passport and DEMANDED TO SEE ANOTHER FORM OF IDENTIFICATION with my address on it. I gave him my driver's license. He then ASKED ME TO VERIFY THE EXACT TELEPHONE NUMBER that I had on file. It was ridiculous because I am a Gold Points member and as far as I know, there is nothing suspicious about me.

I checked out after one night and found a room at another large chain's hotel (recently renovated and with free Internet service) very close to Dupont Circle for $139 per night in contrast to the Hyatt's rate of $229 per night.

When I arrived at the Hyatt it was 98 degrees outside, and probably 85 or 90 inside the hotel lobby. They gave me a room on the 11th floor. Since heat rises the temperature in the halls were at least 95 degrees. It felt like the heat was on. It was hell getting up and down the only two elevators, which were also very hot and slow. The management would not say anything about the problem other than 'we're working on it', or 'the air conditioning' can't keep up with the heat outside. Sensor on aiir conditioning in the rooms, only worked as long as a person was in the room. Poor service and management. Dirty dishes sat outside several rooms for two days before anyone picked them up. No shuttle service, very rude responses from employees regarding trying to get a rental car, "we absolutely don't do that". I rate this hotel as a 1 or 2. The pool area was the only nice place, even has a life guard.

I have stayed here twice in the past year. Large rooms and convenient to the subway. That about sums it up. VERY overpriced for what you get service wise. You could find something much better...and cheaper...in a much cooler place. I would keep looking if I were you. You could easily find something less expensive and with a lot more pampering in DC if you try priceline or hotwire. Which is what I did, and never returned to this place again.
