Description: Grapeseed American Bistro is a casual bistro that matches great food and wine together. With anywhere from 80 to 100 wines by the glass and approximately 325 bottle listed, we cater to the novice wine lover and to the experienced. We start with a bottle of wine and pick out the characteristics and nuances of the wine and then award winning Chef Jeffrey Heineman creates a menu item to highlight the flavors of the wine. So come in and relax, have a taste or a glass of wine and try something on our ever-changing menu.

“Could have been great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2012

Attended a business/social dinner here mid-week in the wine cellar private room. It was hit and miss. Pros: Nice atmosphere, food flavor was good, presentation was nice, solid wine list, creative menu, and very well-coordinated staff serving courses for 10 people. Cons: Waiter opened and served a 2nd bottle of same wine without having anyone taste it and he poured it into glasses containing wine from 1st bottle (basically a wine no-no that was sadly ironic in the wine cellar), one dining companion located a long black hair in her entree about 75% of the way through (waiter quickly took the plate away & she declined the offer of having him bring something else), and I had a short white hair in my dessert. The waiter was clearly frustrated and uncomfortable with the hairs in the food, but his demeanor ultimately made the dinner experience even more awkward. Our hosts are relatively frequent diners here and they were upset with how it was handled. I wanted to like Grapeseed more, but the image of a 10 inch black hair held up in the air with food dangling off of it is sticking too strongly for me to go back.

“Good value, if you choose carefully”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 6, 2012

A nice place where you can get some very good dishes at an affordable price if you choose right. I got 2 very tasty appetizers (wild mushrooms; beef tips), and a glass of wine and was plenty satisfied. Sit at the bar and check out all the wines on offer. Service was friendly but not terribly knowledgeable about wine.

“Busy and noisy but the food is good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2012

Obviously a popular neighborhood place in the "uncool" part of Bethesda. This is fine because it's also less difficult to find a parking place on a Saturday night. Highlights: chopped tomato in olive oil and garlic as a dipper for the delicious bread, sauteed calamari with capers and lemon juice, fricaseed exotic mushrooms in a cream sauce (could have skipped the polenta but that's me) and the soft shell crab (2 big ones). Server was knowledgeable but a little casual and then focused on a large party but my water glass was filled often (a pet peeve of mine when it doesn't happen) and we enjoyed the wine pairings. I'd come back and maybe sit at the bar, which seemed full of locals/regulars.

“great service, good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 5, 2012

Really nice soft shell crab for me. My wife had a delightful barley risotto cake ...unlikely title, great, restrained dish. Super service and sitting next to the open kitchen was fun. Not sure the wine pairings were any better than I would have done myself.
