South Street Steaks bills itself as a sub shop established to bring South Philadelphia cheese steaks to the Washington, DC area. They do a pretty good job. The bread, meat and cheese are good. The prep is good. The service is with a smile and prompt. The sandwiches are big enough and a regular order of fries is substantial. The shop is clean and maintained.
I have eaten many steak subs at many sub shops and pizzerias in South Philly and South Jersey, as well as what were purported to be Philly steak subs in other parts of the country from Maine to California. The product served by South Street Steaks in Bethesda is close to the "real" thing. If the shop were in Philadelphia, PA or Hammonton, NJ (with its very large Italian-American community), it would be the real thing. The shop's claim to emulate Philly steak subs is legitimate. I would place them somewhere in the middle in terms of flavor and composition if the comparison is limited only to shops in the Greater Philadelphia area. If the comparison is expanded to include the rest of the USA, South Street Steaks rates much higher, right along with many Philly-area steak sub shops.
