“Gigantic portions, Tacky bartender, mediocre dishes, butter and cream in everything.”
Everyone is very polite and cheerful in the DR, and the staff are personable but when we eat at the bar (I have many times, because the pickings are slim in this area) one of the bartenders is always addressing me, and others, by the term "Hon" as if she is best pals with everyone there. What a turn off! This may work at another establishment or if she knows you very well, but she addresses everyone this way. One expects a higher level of decorum here, especially upstairs, not in the pub. Her approach is simply crass and is NOT a draw.
Food needs to be taken up a few notches in terms of quality and sophistication, considering the prices. While I respect the longevity of a chef's career in one place - he apparently has been there for 20 + yrs - one needs to move with the times. While the menu looks good, the food is truly not that interesting. Why doesn't this otherwise accommodating Hotel take a cue from all the foodie places in Portland or Portsmouth and raise the bar on its culinary smarts?
