From the moment we arrived through the old-fashioned gates, gardens blooming, we were indeed in a magical place. The photos on the website do not capture the spaciousness of the inn as you open the wide stained-glass front door off from the grand front porch complete with a relaxing hammock and rocking chairs. You must go to Tanglewood to truly believe the intriguing rooms, furnishings, and oft whimsical décor and art. We stayed in the York Harbor Suite. It was breathtaking and well over 500 square feet of a combined Victorian sitting area, a screened sunporch overlooking the gardens and gurgling fountains, a bedroom with a cozy fireplace, and cottage style bath. The handpainting on the floors and walls and furniture is so intricately wonderful, along with all of the antiques. And we so loved our bed bathed in the morning glow as we slept in the softest of sheets with feather pillows and down blankets. The ‘bountiful breakfast buffet’ varied each day with an assortment of gourmet offerings. The innkeepers made us feel so comfortable and ‘at home’ and showed us the other rooms in the inn. They all have their own special charm and features that make them unique. There is so much to do in the York Harbor area. We explored the forts in Kittery, the old seaport of Portsmouth, Stonewall Kitchens (you will not be able to decide which of the hundreds of samples are best). We were given all sorts of advice about the best scenic routes to go to Ogunquit (which we found crowded and somewhat commercial) and Kennebunkport, which are easy drives away. We also were sent to some excellent restaurants nearby the inn. Do not miss the Cliff Path which is accessed via a short five minute walk from the inn along the rocky ocean coast, which then leads to the Fisherman’s Walk along York River and the Wiggly Bridge. And of course, almost two miles of Long Sands Beach and the incredible Cape Neddick Lighthouse are just past the inn, which is situated in a beautiful residential area of old summer resort estates lined with canopies of oak trees. We truly were reluctant to return to the West Coast, but hope to return to Tanglewood Hall someday soon.
