My husband and I love, love, love Longs Sands Beach in York. We look forward every year to our off-season get-a-ways. We especially have anticipated our stays at the Anchorage, mainly due to the great package deal that is offered and the amenities. Of course the location is perfect. We stay off-season due to the fact that the cost of staying at the Anchorage during season is beyond our budget.
For the past two Christmas season's we traveled to York to enjoy the Christmas parade and the Festival of Trees along with all the other festivities of the weekend. When we stayed in 2011, we were highly disappointed in the pool area. The hot tub was not up to temperature and the pool was uncomfortably cool. We just assumed that maybe the pool had been topped off with new water and hadn't had a chance to heat up. That being said, It was disappointing that we were unable to enjoy the pool. Being able to swim and enjoy a hot tub is one of the main reasons we have chosen to stay here.
So the Holiday season rolled around again this year and we decided to stay once again at the Anchorage. We were uncertain about staying again but thought that the year before was a fluke. I called for reservations and asked for a room on the second floor in the main building which I later upgraded without a problem to a third floor room. The person that I spoke with said she wanted to give me a room with a nice view. She also stated that the room she would like to book us into had a small shower and that many people didn't like it but it had one of the nicest views. I said that it would be fine (big mistake). I told her my husband was short but big thinking that the shower area was height restricted and he would be fine in the shower.
Well I am a 5ft tall and that shower wouldn't be comfortable for anyone over 8 or 10 years old. It is ridiculously narrow!!!! Also, the roof of the new building in front restricted the view of the lighthouse. I realize everyone's interpretation of "view" is subjective but I think the lighthouse is an important aspect of the beach. Needless to say, the Anchorage was not at all busy that weekend.
We decided to just deal with the bathroom as it was a mistake on my part and happily headed down to the pool. I was able to get into the pool but it was soooo cold!!!! My husband couldn't even get in. The hot tub wasn't much better as it was actually only lukewarm. We decided to go back to our room and head out for supper but before doing so, we commented to the front desk that the pool was uncomfortable and the hot tub was only lukewarm. This comment was brushed off as if it really wasn't a problem.
The next day after returning from a fulfilling Congdon's breakfast and taking a ride, we were looking forward to a nice relaxing afternoon in the pool area and hot tub. We got changed and headed to the pool. The pool was so cold that I couldn't get in and families had their infants and children in the so-called hot tub. The staff hadn't informed patrons that the pool was most definitely not working properly nor had they posted any sign offering apologies for the inconvenience. I realize mechanical issues arise but the staff had been informed on two separate occasions and I had specifically asked if the pool was up to temp and running before I made final reservations.
We decided to head out to the Atrium pool. It was now snowing. Once we got into the pool, we were happy that we made the decision to use the Atrium pool as it was actually heated as expected. Yet, we were unable to use the amenity of a hot tub because there isn't one in that building. Also, there isn't a bathroom that I could find. Maybe I missed where it was? I needed to use a bathroom and had to throw on a sweatshirt, leave the back building, walk in flip, flops to the front in a snowstorm and get up to the third floor to our room. Let's just say that was the end of trying to enjoy any of the pools.
I have to end by saying that there was trash strewn about at the entrance to the Atrium building and the Maintenance employee made a point of apologizing that I had to walk by the mess. He was in the process of getting it cleaned up. Also, I have been a patron of the Anchorage in York since 1982. It seems to me that as the years go on, the Anchorage has lost it's personal charm.
I have never given a negative review but after contacting the Anchorage Inn on 3 separate occasions about our latest weekend without any type of response back, I felt the need to relay our experiences for the past 2 years. It is disheartening to know that we will no longer be booking with the Anchorage.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review about your stay in December 2012.
I am happy to report that during this winters renovations were were able to replace all of the stand-up showers that you described with the same tub/shower combinations that are found in all of our other Main Building rooms.
In researching your concerns, the pools on the weekend of your stay were recording at normal temperatures; for our indoor pool, this means between 79-82 degrees and the hot tub between 99-101 degrees. I am sorry that you found the pools and hot tub in the Main Indoor pool to be too cool. Our pools are monitor a minimum of three times a day and each temperature reading reflected a number within our standard.
We are certainly glad to hear that you were able to enjoy the Atrium pool and had a great breakfast at the local favorite - Congdons!
We do wish you all the best in your future travels.
