If you are looking for an inexpensive yet comfortable accommodation near Portland or Freeport, this is the place. The chain motels in those towns are fairly high-priced. We found this location by using Google Earth, and then checked TripAdvisor. Most of the reviews were very old and one suggested the owners intended to close down, which is not at all the case. The motel is situated on Hwy 1, but the units themselves are down a driveway back off the road snuggled behind large pines on the river, and you can see the river from most if not all units. It is very quiet (only the gentle sound of the river). The charming old town of Yarmouth is accessible just across the bridge by foot. Portland and Freeport are both just minutes away by car. There is a supermarket near by and a restaurant for breakfast and lunch across the street.
We booked the cheapest room – a small queen for about $90 incl. tax. I was surprised how spacious and well-appointed it was. The furniture is all in good condition. The room had a double couch as well as an easy chair and a small desk with chair for work. Plenty of drawer and closet space, a coffee-maker with two packets of coffee are also included. There is of course a television, wifi and radio-alarm clock.
We had dinner in their Italian restaurant, and noticed it was primarily frequented by locals. The food was delicious (we had broiled haddock and grilled scampi) and the wine excellent, all very reasonably priced.

I grew up in Yarmouth and had always knew of people from away staying at Down East Village, though I never needed to myself. Two summers ago my husband and our son traveled to Yarmouth to visit my mother and other family. The house was going to be filled with family so we opted to stay someplace close by. I called Down East on a whim, and was able to actually speak with someone, and had wonderful customer service through out. When we arrived check in was very easy, and we found our room to be quite large, yet cozy. Was it older decor? Yes, but the feel of the place really brought me to a nostalgic place from my Maine childhood. The place is on the funky side, but comfortable, both space wise and temperature. There is an abundance of tall pine trees, and a decent pool on the property. If you're looking for a unique place to stay that has a mom and pop feel to it, and if you're tired of staying in uninteresting cookie cutter chain motels, try the Down East Village Motel. We're going back to Yarmouth in a few weeks and unfortunately the motel is booked solid that weekend. Next year we'll call sooner.

This is not a resort hotel, but rather a family hotel that is also business-friendly, and great for family reunions and get-togethers of many kinds. Fine for singles, couples, families, business travelers, tourists -- for people whose destination is Yarmouth, Freeport or Portland, as well as for those just making an overnight stgop before continuing onward. The restaurant offers excellent breakfasts, lunches and dinners; the dinner schedule varies with the season (check first). The location is absolutely top-notch -- less than fifteen minutes to downtown Portland, and even closer to Freeport, in a scenic section of an historic town on the coast of Maine. The owners are hands-on managers, and the staff is quite pleasant and friendly. Though it is rumored that the owners wish to retire, I hope that the motel never closes, but rather, that it passes to a new generation who can build on the motel's history and solid reputation. It is, I have heard, the oldest motel in the state of Maine under the same management. Yes, it is 1950-ish, but -- hey -- the 1950's were great years! So is this motel.

This motel is a thowback to the fifties and a time when families traveled for the destination and the enjoyment of each others company. We just spent a long weekend with extended family that has been coming here for the Clam Festival for about 25 years, and my wife and I had a wonderful time. There is not much to do except spend time with each other and hang around the pool. It will be a shame when this motel closes its doors for the last time, (which the owners hope will be soon) because a part of Americana will be lost. Close to everything and withing walking distance of the festival the Down East Village is a hidden gem. P.S. The breakfasts at the restraunt will keep you going all day long.

The location was great (close to family for Thanksgiving feast), but our room was absolutely disgusting. The mildew stench gave my wife and I a headache, our noses were stuffed, and our clothing/suitcase wreaked.

The family owned, small town feel of the place was very nice and I don't like complaining, but had to say something.

My other family members stayed in two other rooms (different building units entirely) and they enjoyed their stay very much. MY ADVICE... do not stay in the rooms in the building/unit along Route 1. They seem to be older and covered in moisture/mildew.

  • Disliked — Mildew smell.

This is a family-owned motel right on Route One in Yarmouth. I've stayed there on multiple occasions, and have always found it to be clean and consistent, but no frills. The interiors of the rooms look a little dated, but they are generally well maintained. They will accept pets for an additional $8/day. Even though it's on Route One, the units are set far enough back off the road that there is very little road noise. They are open year round, unlike some costal Maine motels. A few of the units have a mini fridge and microwave, and a few face the river which feels more secluded. I believe they have wireless internet now, but call to double check. There is a restaurant and an outdoor pool on site, but I haven't been to either, so I can't comment on them. They roll up the sidewalks pretty early in Maine, so make your dinner plans accordingly. The front office is not open 24 hours. If you plan on checking in late -- say, after 6:00 PM -- call the front desk and tell them in advance so they can tell you where to pick up your key if they won't be in the office by the time you arrive. If you're in Yarmouth in the summer, the Clam Festival is fun. The motel is also convenient to Freeport, for your obligatory trip to L.L. Bean. L.L. Bean is just up the road and open 24 hours, and it's a much nicer shopping experience late at night when you have the place to yourself. I would be happy to stay at Down East Village again the next time I'm in Yarmouth.

  • Liked — Proximity to Yarmouth, clean and consistent.
  • Disliked — The rooms are spartan and a little dated.
