“Nice, cheap alternative to higher priced places in Bar Harbor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2009

The Inn offers B&B roooms, cottages, and motel-type rooms. We stayed in one of their cottages. The cottage we were in had enough room for two people, it's definitely smaller than your average motel room. They offered muffins and coffee to those who stayed in the cottages while those who stay in the B&B get the full breakfast treatment. The staff and owners were very friendly and helpful. The cottage we had was rustic and comfortable. The place is about 10 miles from Bar Harbor and getting there was not a problem, nor did we find it inconvenient to drive the distance.

Stayed here the last weekend in May, 2009 for 2 nights. We had a Lodge room, D, with 2 double beds & a futon. Chuck and Sue Starr were great and very helpful with what to see and where to eat. The room is above an apartment. It was large and comfortable, recently rennovated. There was a small refrigerator, a microwave, hair dryer, TV with great cable selection. Room was very clean, beds were great. We are 2 professional Realtors, and one of us has done Rentals in a resort area. Nice jacuzzi to use in the evening and several places for lobster nearby.

We have stayed at the Open Hearth Inn twice now. Last July and this past Memorial weekend. Chuck and Sue are two of the nicest people we have ever met. Staying there is like staying at a friend's house.

When we stayed a year ago we had the larger cottage number 8 and our friend had number 9. Both cottages were cute and spotless. Is there oodles of room? No. Is it comfortable? Absolutely Did I mention the place is spotless? Beautifully decorated!

The cottages did not look run down to me this year. We had our teenage daughter with us. We took the two room apartment and it was spacious enough. Our daughter slept well and said futon was comfortable and our queen size bed was as well. I don't know if this Apartment has air conditioning but with most Maine nights being cool the more important issue was heat which it had and we used. The door to the bed room did not close all the way but that was not an issue. It closed enough to afford us and our daughter privacy. All linens were above average. The pretty quilts, bedspreads and throw pillows all add to the tasteful decor.

As far as being right on the main drag, yes this place is and it is right across from the airport. If you call a grassy field with a paved runway an airport. Since we live near 3 of the busiest airports in the country. (Newark, LaGuardia and JFK all being within 12 miles of our house) this "airport” is a joke to us. The planes don't start until about 8 or 9 AM and all activity ceases at around 8 PM. The main drag can get busy with traffic during the day but even in season it's pretty quiet at night. If you are SUPER sensitive to street noise and can't stand a few dozen cars passing over the course of the night then this place and all the others along the highway from Bangor to Acadia are not for you.

The breakfast offered to those renting cottages and the apartment was more than adequate. The homemade muffins are top rate (Sue should offer them for sale)
They were different every morning. We were offered blueberry, cranberry, carrot, applesauce and white chocolate chip. (She usually puts out two different kinds each morning) All were delicious! Brown and white hard boiled eggs, two types of cereals (Cheerios and flakes type) A variety of fruit (Apples, bananas, oranges) A variety of yogurts, coffee and a nice selection of teas. Unlike the chain places they replenish everything as needed so if you walk in towards the end (Breakfast is served 8 to 10 AM) there is still plenty for you to choose from.

We made use of the Jacuzzi after a long day of hiking in Acadia. The Jacuzzi room is as tastefully appointed as the rest of the establishment with loads of plants and decorative accents that made us feel like we were staying in a fancy resort.

I don’t quite understand how anyone can be unhappy staying here. Chuck and Sue are wonderful people and they offer above average accommodations for the rate they charge. I have stayed in many places in and around Bar Harbor, including some upscale, overrated and in my opinion over priced ones and this is the one I will go back to again! I prefer to spend my money in the shops in town than on the overpriced luxury resorts nearby. I also prefer to offer my financial support to wonderful mom and pop establishments like this one. And now the are two must haves when we visit Bar Harbor…popovers at Jordan Pond House and Sue’s muffins!

Finding a gem like the Starr's have created is something to write about. Their friendly and helpful attention to guests and their needs was like having your very own concierge in a luxury hotel. The breakfast was amazing and served with style and panache. We were so happy with our stay we booked the same week next summer.

inside of the cottage was cute and updated. However, it is SMALL!!! No room to relax at all. Cottages are all right on top of each other. Exterior door and windows need to be repainted. Starting to look run down from the outside. RIGHT on the main road and lots of traffic noise. Old, old wall heater... so there is a plug in electric heater to use. Small breakfast area and selection (but did have muffins still warm from the oven) :) Not the best of places to stay, but clean and updated interiors a big plus.

  • Liked — Bar Harbor only 10 minutes away
  • Disliked — small and noisy

The Owners Sue and Charles are great! They are always ready to help you as much as they can.
Cottages are clean and very cozy, motel rooms are great as well (we have stayed in both), but my favourite room is B&B4!!!
Continental breakfast is delicious: muffins mhmmm... I miss it a lot!
I could write an essay about the greateness of the B&B breafast, there are no words to describe how delicious it is!!! Bravo for the Cook!
To sum up: great place to stay!!!

The owner/hosts are very nice people. Breakfast was sparse in variety basically muffins and yogurt. Juice was kids boxes of juice. Coffee was good. We had two cottages, 1 & 2. Bed in #2 was old and needs to be replaced. #1 had better beds. Doors would not close completely or did stick closed. #2 was not well insulated from noise and the car noise and airplane noise was very evident. #1 was better. Generally the cottages were clean. Small shower stalls. The hot tub is new, nice, and in a pleasant room off of the deck.

  • Liked — Low price in August.
  • Disliked — the noise, minimal breakfast
