My husband and I and our 7-month-old cocker spaniel puppy, who is well-mannered and housebroken, made arrangements to stay at the Isleview for a week at the end of July / beginning of August 2003. The first few days were OK, but then the owner's very large Great Dane puppy kept breaking loose from the owner's house, often without the muzzle he was supposed to be wearing. Several times their dog went after our puppy, pulling his ears, intimidating and nipping at our puppy. After this happened several times (we had to go get the owner) she said she can't guarantee that the dog won't be let out and blamed it on her two-year-old. (Who is watching the two-year-old?) The Dane interrupted our dinner at a picnic table on the grounds, going after our puppy who was tied to our table on a leash, eating our puppy's food. We were told by the owner there is nothing she could do so we should go elsewhere. (Also, the Dane nipped at my husband several times when my husband tried tin intervene and get our puppy out of the way.) One of the owner's other small children also came to our table when we were trying to have dinner and disturbed us, (sat there playing with toy cars making loud noises, with the owner not paying attention). This same child came to our cabin and without knocking on our screen door, spoke through the door and asked to play with our dog (so much for privacy and quiet!) After all this, my husband and I decided to check out a day early (again the owner said she could do nothing and actually encouraged that find someplace else). Since it was at the height of summer, on a weekend, we had a difficult time finding a motel for one night on a weekend that accepts pets. We did find one, but it was expensive because the only cabin they had available was a suite for three couples. However, this second motel owner was very understanding.
(She was formerly a dog officer and agreed that what happened at the Isleview wasn't right..) Before we checked out of the Isleview we made sure that we were refunded for the night that we cancelled (we were) but we also wanted compensation for another night's stay because of the inconvenience and repeated disturbances. She did not comply, so we reported all this to the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce. The woman at the chamber seemed to empathize more with the Isleview owner saying that there were several problems that needed to be addressed, that she had too much on her hands. (Why are they in business if they can't handle it?) The woman at the chamber also told us that we were definitely not the first people to complain, either..After visiting the Isleview to see things for herself, agreeing that there were problems, the woman at the chamber wrote a formal letter to the Isleview asking them to refund us for another night's stay. It has been almost a month and we have gotten nothing, even after we have followed up several times with the woman at the chamber who said she would "look into it".
She said that since the Isleview is not a member of the chamber she couldn't promise us anything.
Since this has not been settled, we decided to let other prospective visitors to the Isleview to BEWARE of the owner's dog and the flippant attitude. (We felt as if the owner took NO responsibility - again blaming her toddler on repeatedly letting the dog out and suggesting that we leave!) BE CAREFUL OF YOUR CHOICES!

The customer who apparently wrote this did not in fact ever speak to me directly. I only spoke to her husband. After an incident when my black lab puppy also 7 months old tried to play with their dog but was much larger and appeared to frighten the women, I apologised directly to her at the steps of her cottage. Later that evening the husband came to me with concerns that their dog was frightened and I was very upset. I told the husband that my dog would be kept locked up with the exception of leased walks for the duration of their stay. I promised to keep a close eye on him and I never heard any complaints about my children. In fact I was with two of my children the first day these people arrived when they invited my children to stop by any time to play with their puppy. They showed off tricks that their puppy had learned at puppy kindergarten. After talking at length with the husband about how dogs behave and training etc, he told me he feared for his dog. I said I was very sorry and I would understand if they decided they couldn't stay and would happily refund their money. He then told me if they received a discount they would be willing to stay. I felt that if their puppy was frightened and they were in fear for him then I didn't think a discount would make the dog feel better. The point about the Ellsworth Chamber of Commerce writing a formal letter to me of any kind is untrue and I will be informing them of this statement. They did visit me and the results of that meeting were very possitive and are available to the public. I try to do my very best for all of my customers. My children are respectful and polite at all times. It is hard work running a motel but we enjoy our work and look forward to all the people that come back each year and sometimes 3 or 4 times a year to spend their vacation at the Isleview.
