“Relaxing Inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2009

We stayed for two nights. The kids stayed in one room and my wife and I stayed in another for a special rate for the two rooms. The rooms were tastefully decorated in a traditional old New England style. The beds were comfortable and the innkeepers were friendly. The breakfasts were great each morning. I slept great both nights. The gronds were well maintained and you could walk to the river's edge for a spectacular view.

Highly recommend this inn.

We loved this B & B, the owners were very friendly and the B & B was like a home from home. It was very cosy and I think i could have curled up in the bed and listened to the wind outside forever!!

LOVELY and comfortable, great breakfast and spotlessly clean.

This inn is a gem! We stayed at four inns on our recent trip to Maine and New Hampshire, and this one was by far the best, though not the most expensive! Tom and Judy are great hosts, and they have created a really special inn on the banks of the river. The view of the river from our room was lovely. Tom helped me plan a loop walk of about three miles that brought me across the river, along the other side, through Brunswick, over the river again and back to the inn. Lovely! He also helped us with a great choice for dinner, the Sea Dog Brewery, set on a jutting peninsula, right in the river, with great food and photos of the way it used to be 100 years ago. While in town, we also enjoyed the antique mall in the mill just across the river in Brunswick.

Our room was very comfortable, decorated beautifully, and not to frou frou for us. Good WiFi connection. There was a nice love seat in our room, and plenty of space; the bed was very comfortable with good linens. In the morning, the breakfast was just delicious, and served in a lovely dining room. There was also a nice parlor four our use, and a refrigerator that we could use. We didn't want to leave!

  • Liked — The comfort and space of the inn and the friendliness of the innkeepers.
  • Disliked — Nothing!

Thanks to Tom and Judy for making our first day on vacation very special. We arrived very late due to a delayed flight and they made it no problem for us and our friends. The inn is a little out of the way but that is a good thing. Right on a river I cannot pronounce. Plus they have to great dogs. They made us feel right at home. A very nice breakfast set us up for a great day of touring the Maine coastline. Wish we had more time at their lovely B and B. Will stay there anytime we are in Maine

My parents stayed here several times while visiting me at Bowdoin College. The bed and breakfast is across the river from the college, but still very convenient. I stayed here for one night and really enjoyed it. The room was tastefully decorated. The owners are extremely friendly and seem to really enjoy what they do. They serve a cooked breakfast to you and will introduce you to the other guests if you end up eating at the same time.

The owners really will go out of their way for you! If you are looking for a friendly, welcoming place to stay in the Bath/Brunswick/Topsham area, I strongly reccommend the Black Lantern.

We recently visited Maine with friends from Europe and enjoyed a wonderful stay at the Black Lantern. The rooms were recently re-done and were very charming. The location riverside was quite scenic. And the breakfast was delicious. But it was the hosts who made our stay especially memorable. They are two exceptionally friendly and helpful hosts who take great care of their guests. We went for a ride in our friend's vehicle and left ours in the driveway with the windows open. Well, it happened to rain and we expected to return to wet seats. Tom, the owner, realizing that he couldn't close the windows without a key, covered our car with a tarp to keep everything inside nice and dry. That's really going well beyond the call of duty and it's the mark of a fabulous host!

5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 5, 2005

We stayed at the Black Lantern July 2-4, 2005. The inn is located in a small town of Topsham, near Bath and Brunswick. The inn is in the National Register of Historic Homes. There are three guest rooms. One has a king-size bed and a recliner, as well as a private bathroom with shower. Another room has a queen-size bed with a private bathroom, and the third room has a queen-size bed with a private bathroom across the hall. We stayed in the king-size bedroom. It is located on the second floor of the house, at the top of a fairly steep flight of stairs. The room was good size; the bed was covered with a nice quilt, and another quilt hung on the wall (Judy, one of the inn-keepers, makes them; she has won many awards for her work). The bathroom is small, but the shower is modern and nice. The sink is in the room itself. There is a mirror (not too straight) and the floor is a bit tilted. There is no A/C, but there is a fan (it was not hot the week-end we were there). We kept the windows open, though. The bedding is Ralph Lauren. The innkeepers provide one glycerin face soap, one small bath soap, and a small tube of toothpaste. I wish there were other toilettries available.
As it often is in small b&bs, the walls are pretty thin and you can hear people walking and using the shower.
The downstairs living room and a dining area (where breakfast is served from 7 to 9 - Tom and Judy asked us the night before what time in that timeframe we like to eat) are very cozy. We worked on a puzzle one night after dinner and had tea several times.
Breakfasts were amazing. The first morning Tom and Judy served a flavorful fruit salad, orange juice, and two eggs benedict. The second morning we had fresh melon, a small omelet, and a large popover stuffed with fruit medley and drizzled with chocolate sauce.
Tom and Judy were also sensitive to special dietary needs (I am lactose intolerant). They are very interesting people: he -- a retired Navy officer, she -- a former Disney Land nurse. They have 5 kids, two of whom we met, and many grandchildren.
They were very friendly and accommodating. They had many suggestions on things to do in the area and made restaurant reservations for us one of the nights. We will definitely be back.
