My partner and I were exploring Mid Coast Maine over the Labor Day weekend and decided to visit Stonington which was voted the 7th prettiest villiage by Down East Magazine. The weather was miserable and the village was not looking particularly pretty so we decided to grab a bite to eat. There were several choices but Harbor Cafe seemed to have good buzz about it so we entered in. Unawares to us the cafe was getting ready to close in about half an hour and the staff was busy trying to clear out the customers.
Our menus were plonked on our table and by just looking at the many items listed we should have stood up and left, but we didn't and ordered clam chowder, fish and chips and the lobster roll special.
After quite a wait the food arrived. Fish and chips and lobster roll first followed by the clam chowder.
I don't know how our waitress in the cafe was brought up but usually the soup course is first followed by the main dishes.
We took one look at the chowder and wondered what was in the bowl. Sure, there were clams, lots of rubbery ones, and they had been dumped in the most disgusting broth loaded with salt and completely inedible. The bowl sat on the table untouched as we moved on to the rest of the food. We don't know when the fries had been cooked as they were stone cold and tasteless. Surely the lobster roll would be yummy (as I was told it was local)? Wrong, it was bland and boring and on a stale roll.
So we picked at the food, paid the bill (which was not cheap), and asked about
the make up of the chowder. We were told "this is how it's made in Maine"
Well, I'm not from Maine, but I know chowder, fish and chips and lobster rolls. The meal was a sorry excuse for food and the cafe should be avoided at all costs. What a shame and send in Gordon Ramsey!
