“perfect small hotel with everything you need”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 10, 2009

Just like most of the reviews said, this is a great find. We often stay in luxury hotels so we are picky. this small hotel had everything we needed and more that you'd expect for $80 per night. Bed was very comfortable. Room had TV, wireless internet, little coffee set up, fridge, etc. Booked room with queen bed, not facing main street - - - so nice a quiet.

Stayed at this Boyce's on September 1st. Barrett, the owner, couldn't have been nicer and the place, although not "fancy", was just great! We had a 2-bedroom apartment with a living room and small kitchen. All the details were taken care of in the kitchen and we felt very comfortable. Would highly recommend Boyce's.

Note that Stonington is a very pretty harbor town - worth the long drive down the peninsula to get there!

Boyce's Motel, run by warm and friendly Barrett (don't know his last name), was a treat. The rooms were small (but only $100 in high season!) but absolutely immaculate. Our room (#10, I believe) was on the second floor of a detached building, up a side street right off the main drag. As a result, the views from the spacious front porch were exceptional and the room was blissfully quiet at night. If you're going to stay in Stonington, visit Barrett and Boyce's. You'll be glad you did.

My wife and I recently stayed at Boyce's for three nights. From the outset, Barrett Gray went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and comfortable. On a rainy morning, he showed up with umbrellas, in case we needed them. When we inquired about Isle Au Haut, he reserved us two bicycles for the day. His recommendations were spot on and he had great ideas for us. If you go, see the movie at the Opera House, it's true small town at its best.

Our room was clean, comfortable and with a view of the harbor and private deck a real value. I would recommend this motel for anyone looking for a rustic retreat with plenty to do in the area.

Nice cafe two doors down. Fun town for a get-away-from-it-all vacation. Scenery is stunning.

The hotel is situated near the harbor, and consists of motel rooms and appartments. Our room was opposite the office overlooking the street and there was some vehicle noise in the morning from 4.30am when the lobster men were commuting to work, but we knew that when we accepted the room.

There is a small deck across the road overlooking the water with a couple of chairs for hotel guests.

The room was not overlarge with a double bed, desk, tv and table with coffee maker and was ample for our one night stay. All the linens, curtains and bedding were white and the bed cover seemed too good for a hotel. It was all very clean.

The owner was friendly and offered information on Stonington activities and the surrounding area.

Our evening meal was taken at Fishermans Friend, 5 minutes walk and overlooking the harbor.

Its rare to find an affordable room with this kind of location, right in the heart of the village of Stonington. Usually anything this well located gets sold off, and upscaled! Fortunately, Boyces is still wonderfully old fashioned, and therefore affordable while being within walking distance of everything in the wonderful village of Stoningtone (ferry docks, Opera House, restaurants and galleries). I stayed here with my teenage daughters because one of them was performing at the Opera House and I wanted something clean and cheap, this fit the bill perfectly. For little more 60 dollars in high season, I was provided a small room with 2 twins, It was immaculate, though tiny, with a fridge, desk, chair and older tiny bath.

The doors to the units open directly to the street, but the rooms are arrayed up a hill along an alley off the main road with a private parking lot (though there is plenty of free street parking too) You can hear traffic noise, but the whole town shuts down at 5 PM, so it's quiet at night. We heard the fishermen (and women) heading to the docks in their Ford F150s around 4 or 5 AM, but other than traffic noise, they weren't disruptive, and it's authentic, which is also rare in travel these days! Our unit was pretty close to the road, some of the units further back are probably quieter (and maybe pricier)

The property is across Main Street from the water, but has a little private deck on the water side of Main Street with a picnic table and 4 adirondak chairs, so you can sit and enjoy the working waterfront and veiws of the islands. We could walk to all the restaurants, shops and galleries. There is also a locally owned convenience store, several churches, granite museum, Stonignton Opera House with a variety of live shows and movies and a public library with wifi (rarely open, but you can access the wifi from the porch) within walking distance. A slightly longer walk (maybe 10 minutes), will take you to the ferry dock for trips to Isle au Haut, making this a good, inexpensive place to stay before or after a camping trip to Isle au Haut.

The front desk help was available by buzzing them from the office and were very friendly and helpful. There were not a lot of amenities (sorry, no spa menu here!) at this simple motel, but it was clean and friendly, and superbly located.

  • Liked — Affordable and superbly located
  • Disliked — older electrical service couldn't accomodate my 3 prong plug

I rolled into Stonington kind of late, and was disappointed to see a No Vacancy sign at Boyce's, since they are supposed to be the least expensive place to stay in Stonington. However, they had just had a cancellation, so they gave me a room. I was pleased to see that the room had a little kitchen, complete with utensils and what not. With the prices of hotels along the Maine coast in summer, it's nice to be able to defray the cost of my travels by eating in once in a while. Anyway, the room was cheerful and neat, and the bed was comfy. The location was great, right on the waterfront in Stonington. I had dinner at the Maritime Cafe, a couple doors down the street, and it was quite good. Keep in mind that the restaurants in Stonington, like many other coastal towns in June, close kind of early. The guy at the desk was very friendly and helpful, and gave me lots of info. I was quite happy with my short stay at Boyce's.

  • Liked — big, comfy bed; kitchen
  • Disliked — Very close to street; could have been a little noisy if there had been party people there!
