“Great happy hour”

Wyndham Portland Airport Hotel

My wife and I stayed here for a few days while she attended a conference, which was being held at the hotel. Overall a nice experience. The room was very clean and comfy. Plush drapes help the sleeping in cause, and the air-conditioner worked very well. We had no problems with neighbor noise. Hotel staff is very friendly and were always there to help out with anything we needed. The airport shuttle runs all day and night, which is convenient. The pool did not feel heated to me, but still a nice luxury. *The bar situated inside the hotel is great. Nice tap and bottle selections, with happy hour everyday from 4-7, with all drinks half price. We would stay here again if in the area. Downtown Portland is only ten minutes by car, very easy. Oh, and the Maine Mall that is right across the street... is a Mall. Don't expect any surprises.

“Hotel Under Construction”

Wyndham Portland Airport Hotel

May 28, 2008

We were just crashing for the night before an early AM flight out of Portland. The hotel is under construction, so the reception area was just some computers put near one another in a different area of the hotel. It was going to be a long walk into the tower being constructed just to use a vending machine. And they only had 2 people working in the whole hotel, so some quick extra pilllows took about 45 minutes. The room was clean, and the mattress comfortable, but nothing to brag about. If I could get a good rate, I would probably do it again, but I paid more than I would have to be at a little nicer place and didn't get that benefit. Probably would once construction is done.

Had an early flight so we stayed by the airport. Boked for $58 on Priceline. We had stayed at 6 hotels that week from Ottawa to Boston. This was the best. They put us on the club level I am not sure why ? They are remolding, it is a mess but they are trying to improve the place. The staff was great, our flight was canceled and they gave us 3 30 checkout. We had a very nice stay.

“Worn down and dingy”

Booked this hotel based on past stays while it was a Sheraton. Property has gone downhill with new ownership.

When we arrived, much to our surprise, the pool was closed for major maintenance. Hotel lobby and elevators reeked of toxic paint fumes. Kids were disappointed pool was closed and this was not advertised. Would have really appreciated to know this beforehand as it really let the kids down.

Room was rather worn with a dirty bathroom. Tub drained poorly so you had to stand ankle deep in your own filth. Wires were exposed for the phone jack and were ever so inviting for little kids to play with. All electrical outlets severely overloaded and I feared fire breaking out through the night. Room heat difficult to regulate so it was too hot or too cold. Complained to manager, who was conveniently away. Still awaiting some sort of response...

The only positive about the hotel was that it was very quite. I gather from the number of cars in the parking lot that we were only a handful of morons foolish enough to stay here.

Recommendation is to avoid this hotel and book elsewhere in South Portland.

“A very pleasant experience”

Wyndham Portland Airport Hotel

Mar 20, 2008

We stayed there recently while attending a dog show that was actually held in the hotel’s ballroom, so we got a great room rate. This being Maine and according to the local news, the 5th snowiest winter in the state’s history, it was nice to only have to walk downstairs to the show. The hotel put all those attending the show in the West Tower to keep us apart from the other two-legged guests. Although our room did overlook the Maine Turnpike we did not find the noise to be disturbing at all.

Before I go any further I’d like to note that the hotel only changed hands and became a Wyndam, this past December. So any reviews earlier than December 2007 are reflecting the previous management. From what we saw and heard the new management team has already addressed many of the older complaints.

So yes, it is an older hotel. But everything we saw seemed to be well cared for and clean. Because of the circular shape of the buildings the rooms are a bit oddly shaped, but this is kind of interesting. Our Airedale Terrier loved the floor to ceiling windows and so did we. The room was bright and clean and the bed comfortable.

The indoor pool was one of the largest I have ever seen in a hotel. It was fun to sit in the hot tub as the snow fell outside. The exercise room was also reasonably well equipped.

The staff were great, without exception. Friendly, attentive and accommodating in every way. Consider the complexities of running a good sized hotel, then throw in a snowstorm and a hundred or so dogs you have the potential for some real stress, but the staff took it all in stride and made everyone feel welcome.

About the only complaint I have is I thought the restaurant was a bit overpriced. Especially considering that there are dozens of places to eat within walking distance and many more within a five-minute drive. Few people seemed to use the restaurant when so many far more inexpensive alternatives are at hand. (The hotel is located across the street from the state’s largest mall.)

But we had a great time and a very pleasant experience overall. We can’t wait to go back next year.
