“A very pleasant experience”

Wyndham Portland Airport Hotel

We stayed there recently while attending a dog show that was actually held in the hotel’s ballroom, so we got a great room rate. This being Maine and according to the local news, the 5th snowiest winter in the state’s history, it was nice to only have to walk downstairs to the show. The hotel put all those attending the show in the West Tower to keep us apart from the other two-legged guests. Although our room did overlook the Maine Turnpike we did not find the noise to be disturbing at all.

Before I go any further I’d like to note that the hotel only changed hands and became a Wyndam, this past December. So any reviews earlier than December 2007 are reflecting the previous management. From what we saw and heard the new management team has already addressed many of the older complaints.

So yes, it is an older hotel. But everything we saw seemed to be well cared for and clean. Because of the circular shape of the buildings the rooms are a bit oddly shaped, but this is kind of interesting. Our Airedale Terrier loved the floor to ceiling windows and so did we. The room was bright and clean and the bed comfortable.

The indoor pool was one of the largest I have ever seen in a hotel. It was fun to sit in the hot tub as the snow fell outside. The exercise room was also reasonably well equipped.

The staff were great, without exception. Friendly, attentive and accommodating in every way. Consider the complexities of running a good sized hotel, then throw in a snowstorm and a hundred or so dogs you have the potential for some real stress, but the staff took it all in stride and made everyone feel welcome.

About the only complaint I have is I thought the restaurant was a bit overpriced. Especially considering that there are dozens of places to eat within walking distance and many more within a five-minute drive. Few people seemed to use the restaurant when so many far more inexpensive alternatives are at hand. (The hotel is located across the street from the state’s largest mall.)

But we had a great time and a very pleasant experience overall. We can’t wait to go back next year.

This hotel isn't something special, however there are limited options in the area.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights, in different rooms due to not being certain of our travel plans.

The lobby smells heavily of chlorine. I assume the pool is nearby, but we didn't check that out.

Our first night the heater was rather noisy and in the morning I noticed there was water dripping from it and black mold on the carpet (room 717 of tower one ). There was also a white stain on the bed spread, which we never use thanks to Dateline's hotel room investigation - more proof not to.

The next night we were in room 203 of tower one, with a quieter heater that kicked on and off itself, which made our stay much more pleasant. Some of the furniture looked like it could be cleaned, but this room was much nicer than the first.

The area is really accessible and close to the highway, as well as shopping and restaurants. It's just south of Portland and an inexpensive option that is about 10 minutes away by car.

We paid $80 a night for 3 people and had free internet, so given the amenities, things weren't overly complicated and we worked around the pitfalls by throwing towels over the chairs that were stained and taking off the comforter.

    • Liked — free internet, location to the highway, shopping and restaurants
    • Disliked — cleanliness, mold by the heater / air conditioner, stains on bedspread and chairs

This is the old Sheraton facility with two distinctive round towers across from the mall.
I booked for one night, on the website, their least expensive rate. I'm a Wyndham by Request member, When I arrived, I was asked if it was a king sized non-smoking suite. I mostly heard king, non smoking, and simply agreed. The manager came around the desk and welcomed me, shook my hand and walked me to the elevator.
He offered to take my luggage, but since it's two rolling bags that I'd been shlepping by myself all week I said I'd be fine.

I got to my room on the 9th floor, and walked into a gigantic suite. It had a 36 inch flat screen, two recliners, a couch, a Bose stereo, microwave, wet bar, and a whole separate bedroom with another big tv, robes and a really comfy bed. Both rooms had one entire wall of floor to ceiling windows.

There was a note to me suggesting I try the restaurant, and letting me know my complimentary bottle of chardonnay was chilling in the refrigerator, along with 4 kinds of snacks.

I actually went downstairs and asked the front desk if they'd put me in the wrong room, but she said no, it was because I was a by request member.

it was the best $116 I'd spent all week.
Moral: If you're not a Wyndham by Request member--join!

also a great workout room and pool.

I stayed at this hotel back in 10/05 but I've gone to the hotel numerous times for events since then. I have never been impressed, or even satisfied, with the hotel. The few nights I have stayed there there were loud noises coming from the rooftop on the 2nd hotel tower (like there was a loose piece of metal blowing in the wind) and we could hear the people walking in the room above ours. Quality of the hotel, the smell, and the accommodation's in the room were not up to par. Honestly, there aren't a lot of good hotels in the Portland/South Portland area (I grew up here and used to work in the hotel industry!)...if you stay here, it probably wont be awful, just dont expect luxury comfort. (the location is great tho!)
