Thank you for staying with us recently and for taking the time to write about us on TripAdvisor. It is guests like you that keep us striving to be the best we can be. It is great that your family enjoyed our pool and hot tub, found our staff friendly and helpful, and our rooms clean. We are easly located directly off Exit 45 off of I95 and Exit 2 off of 295. This makes us centrally located to all the fun the Portland area has to offer. Hope to see you and your family soon.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2012

As winter break approached our plans to visit a friend on the Cape were canceled last minute as our friend wasn't feeling well. We had to come up with an alternative to get away with the kids for a few days.

We looked at everything from cabins in NH to hotels all over New England and the Mid-Atlantic. We finally settled on Portland, ME and started looking around for a place to stay. We are on a limited budget as we like to travel a lot throughout the year. My daughter has always enjoyed Embassy Suites and the one in Portland has a pool and of course the breakfast buffet they are well-known for. (This is an important story...don't worry I will get to the Best Western review shortly :)

Looking online at there website we found availability at a price a wee bit higher than we wanted to spend so I was showing the pictures to fiance to make sure it was okay. In the ten minutes I was looking the rate jumped $30 per night :( A lot of people are unaware of the yield management system that many hotels use; it is very similar to the airline industry...once the hotel reaches a certain percentage of bookings for a day or time period the rates jump up. Usually it is no big deal and situations like mine don't happen too often luckily, where the rate jumps while you are in the middle of booking. Often times if you call the hotel up directly and explain nicely they will give you the lower rate (something we call "good customer service") Welll the Embassy Suites was unwilling to budge so we decided not to reward their bad customer service behavior and stay someplace else.

I recalled having stayed at a Best Western in South Portland some 9 years ago and being so impressed that we ended up extending from overnight to staying 3 nights. I looked on here at the reviews and there were only a couple of minor negatives...mostly complaints about the hallways. It's worth mentioning that I don't usually stay at Best Western's as it can be hit or miss on the quality. We checked the rates and got a fantastic deal for the four of us (2 adults and 2 kids) AAA rate, including full breakfast in the restaurant, for $89 per night.

Normally we prefer an accommodation that has two separate sleeping rooms so that we can have a little privacy, but we decided we could forego the extra privacy and go ahead with it. We were NOT disappointed.

The hotel is very clean and well maintained inside and out. There is fresh coffee and tea in the lobby along with homemade cookies round-about check-in time. If you want a cookie though you really have to plan as they are very popular and disappear quickly :)

The hallways (that several had complained about) were very clearly recently redone. Fresh paint, brand new carpet, very clean and no bad odors. On to the room, I have a rule when we travel that no one unpacks until I have inspected the room. Having been a hotel manager for so many years I have a routine to make sure the room is up to par and this one definitely was. Everything was immaculately clean from the floor and walls to the sheets, pillows and dust ruffles...and of course the bathroom. Clean, clean, clean :)

The pool was the main focus of our trip and we spent a great deal of time there every day, several times a day. There is a a very large indoor hot tub and an indoor wading/splash pool for the little kids. Then there is a sizable heated outdoor pool accessed through from a set of stairs into the water inside, then you swim through an opening to the outside. It was wonderful, there really is nothing quite like swimming in a wonderfully warm pool in the winter with steam rising off the water and piles of snow scattered around the pool. There is a nice little lounge area just inside from the swimming facilities with a couple of tables and a television. It's nice if you want to read or chat instead of getting in the pool with the kids. Don't plan on using your computer in this area though as the signal is very low. This was only a minor problem, we were trying to get some work done while the kids swam a bit one day; we couldn't due to the signal, but we really didn't want to work anyway ;)

The breakfasts that you get in the restaurant are HUGE and can definitely help keep costs down on vacation. We are not generally breakfast people, but we did take advantage of it and skipped lunch instead. There was some confusion with the kids vouchers, which are much more limited than the adults. We have two fifth graders, one eleven and one ten and a half, at check-in they gave us an adult voucher for one and a kids voucher for the other. At breakfast the first morning we realized this was a little troublesome given the closeness in their ages, but the server kindly let our ten year old order from the adult menu. I was going to ask at the front desk if they could switch given the situation, but when I saw how much food one person received I decided to just stick with it and be creative. For example, the second morning I wanted an egg so I gave my voucher to our ten year old and I ordered off the kid's voucher. This worked out fine since, as I said, the portions on the other adult vouchers were so large that we could share a bit.

Also to save money we hit up the nearby Trader Joe's and made a few meals in our room making good use of the refrigerator and microwave. We did dine out for dinner a couple of times: we couldn't miss our favorite restaurant in the universe: Silly's! If you haven't been you must! Also, there are many, many brewpubs in and around Portland with great food and awesome beer (Sebago, Gritty McDuff's, SeaDog, etc.)

So, all in all no complaints; we had a lovely stay and will definitely return. The Best Western chain would do very well to use hotels such as the Merry Manor as their standard! Thank you to all of the staff for making our trip wonderful!

Room Tip: We had a room on the middle level toward the back of the hotel and it was nice and quiet. There are...

Thank you very much for choosing to stay with us over school vacation. Thank you for your very kind comments. We do pride ourselves in great customer service and the cleanliness of our rooms. Besides our complimentary breakfast with a qualifying rate, our restaurant also serves dinner from 5 PM until 9 PM with a great selection of burgers, wraps and Reubens. You must try one next time you stay with us. Our unique year round outdoor heated pool has always been received well by our guests young, old and in between. You should try it in the evening in a snowstorm. Unbelieveable! The Portland area has many things for a family to do. There is a children's museum in downtown Portland. There is an indoor karting place a few miles away. In the summer we are just a few minutes away from Funtown Splashtown, Old Orchard's Palace Playland, and many sparkling clean beaches. Of course, for those who like to shop, the largest mall in Maine is two minutes away and the Old Port has many find specialty stores and boutiques. LL Bean in Freeport is just 20 minutes away, and if you are coming from the south, don't forget to stop in at the outlets in Kittery, Maine. We are looking forward to your return visit.

Thank you for staying with us at the Best Western Merry Manor in recently. We sincerely appreciate your business. We are pleased that you found our staff friendly and accomodating. We are aware there are many choices of overnight accomodations in the Portland area and strive to stand out from the rest. We do offer many extras that a guest will not find every place else. We have inroom coffee makers, irons and ironing boards and extra pillows in the room. We have complimentary freshly brewed coffee in the lobby 24 hours a day. You do not have to wait for the morning person to come on duty for that early morning eye opener. We have complimentary toiletries, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste and shaving cream, if a guest forgets something while packing. A made to order complimentary breakfast is included in qualifying rates. Don't forget our year round outdoor heated pool. It is the only one in southern Maine. As far as I know, there is only one other in the state and that is in ski country about two hours away. We hope you will stay with us again.

With Best Western, you are not always sure what you will get. In this instance, it was an amazing surprise. It is a quaint old-fashion hotel that made me feel like it was 1965 -- but only in a good way. The indoor spa with the swim tunnel to the outdoor heated pool was a delight. The rooms were impeccably clean. I'm not a huge fan of the foam beds, but these were great. Lots of pillows, quiet and comfy. The huge TV was a nice surprise, too. We got the manager's special -- just $79. We'll be back!

Room Tip: Go online to the hotel's site for best rates and specials. Bring your bathing suits. Only abou...

What a great way to describe us - "an amazing surprise"! We do our very best to make certain that each and every guest who comes through our doors has that same experience. Besides our unique year round outdoor heated pool, we do have some rooms with the temperpedic bed, very large televisions and massage chairs. Just be sure to request your preference at the time of resevation and we will do our best to honor your wishes. Guests with qualifying rates also get to choose one of four "made to order" breakfasts for everyone in their traveling party at no extra cost. The "Build your Own Breakfast" even offers seasonal fruit for those who don't want a heavy breakfast. The Merry Manor Inn Restaurant is currently open for breakfast and for a light dinner (burgers, fries, salads and wraps).
Thanks again for choosing to stay with us at the Best Western Merry Manor Inn and for your very kind words. We will be looking forward to your next visit.

Thank you very much for your kind words about your stay at the Best Western Merry Manor Inn and for taking a few minutes to share your stay with other readers. We are proud of our friendly associates and strive to provide a great experience for all of our guests. The rooms with the king sized beds and massage are wonderful, but the next time just the two of you get a way for night or two, please try one of our suites. We have several that are oversized rooms with a gas fireplace. Our honeymoon suite even has a hottub. Remember, just because you are not newlyweds, does not mean you can't have a mini honeymoon! We also have two luxury themed suites that are unbelieveable. One is the Captain's Suite, with an extra special touch, and the other is the Maine Lake Lodge. The Maine Lake Lodge has a cabin motiff with a flair. Both of these suites have a fireplace and a hottub. Thanks again for staying with us.

I stayed for the night on Friday January 13th for my daughters 11th birthday. Our room was clean and perfect for our needs. My daughter and her friends really enjoyed the indoor outdoor pool! Everyone had so much fun. The front desk person Brian was so good! He was friendly and helpful throughout the night. The pool area was clean and there were plenty of towels available to use. The cookies at the front desk were a hit! Two free breakfasts at the attached restaurant were included with our room rate and it was delicious! We are planning to come back during school vacation week for another night. Thank you everyone for a fun experience!

Room Tip: With kids it was nice that we were near the pool area.

Happy Belated 11th Birthday Wishes to your daughter. A child only turns 11 once and we are honored that your family chose to spend that time with us. Our year round outdoor heated pool is a big hit with everyone who tries it. Breakfast at our attached restaurant is complimentary with qualifying rates. Be sure to ask our front desk for details. Our restaurant also serves dinner from 5PM to 9PM. Our menu right now offers burgers, wraps and hot wings. Once our renovations are complete, we plan to expand our menu.
If you wanted to go off site for dinner, we are just a few minutes away from the mall where many chain restaurants are located. Downtown Portland, which is 10 minutes away, has an exciting selection of restaurants. Everything from seafood, Thai, Mexican, and more a sophisiticated fare is available there.
We are looking forward to your return.
