Our family happened upon the Sebasco Harbor Inn years ago through a magazine article about family vacations and we have never looked back. We have stayed at the inn three times, twice in cabins and once in the main lodge. The inn is a self-contained compound on one of the many peninsulas along the mid-Maine coast and has been in the same family for generations. Although our trips have spanned at least 5 or 6 years, there have always been many familiar faces in both the staff and guests. The compound consists of a central building, the original lodge, 20 or so cabins of varying sizes, two restaurants, a huge salt water pool on a beautiful point, a 9-hole golf course, 2 tennis courts and a large dock with a multitude of water sports available. There are several luxurious inns in Maine, and this certainly isn’t one of them, but you don’t travel to this sort of a family resort for marble bathrooms When we first visited the Inn, I was reminded of a Lodge my family visited many times in my youth on Sebago Lake which is now overly gentrified and exceedingly expensive. There are large cabins (actually former summer houses), which are perfect for groups of 10 or 12, and smaller cabins just perfect for our family of 4. Many of them have direct ocean views. The cabins we’ve stayed in each had two bedrooms, a bathroom and a living room with kitchenette. They were clean, comfortable and freshly decorated in a simple but tasteful country style. When I asked the main desk to show me pictures of the interiors of some of the other cabins, I was given a notebook containing detailed pictures of each. The service was prompt, friendly and appropriate. Many of the summer employees were students at Bowdoin College, which is just a few miles away in Brunswick. On one visit, my husband had to meet us a few days late due to a family emergency and the hotel sent a drive down to the airport in Portland to meet him. There were a multitude of day and nighttime activities, which kept both the adults and the kids happy (both when they were little and now that they’re adolescents). The hotel owns a lobster boat, which is used for tours of the Maine coastline; Rowboats and sailboats are also available. We’ve taken a sea kayak tour of the coastline from the hotel (a service offered by a local outdoor adventure company) and were delighted to see harbor seals and bald eagles. We’ve never encountered any trouble whatsoever reserving a spot with any of the activities. We’ve always felt entirely comfortable letting our boys be on their own and the hotel always has provided them with bikes. The hotel has a nice little gift shop chock full of Maine-themed items and an ice cream shop. Parents can sign permission for the kids to charge ice cream purchases, a sweet touch (no pun intended) our boys appreciated. Once a week the hotel holds a lobster cookout, which we’ve always loved. On other evenings we’ve eaten dinner in their restaurant overlooking the ocean, The Pilot House. The food is good (not exceptional), the wine list adequate and the meal plan is very reasonably priced. I think at least one of us had lobster for dinner every night. Breakfast consists of a large buffet in the main building. There are a couple of great lobster shacks in the area appropriate for lunch, but by and large the inn is isolated enough that the meal plan is a must. We look forward to many more family trips to Sebasco Harbor and to trying out their beautiful new condos for a large family gathering in the future.

I stayed at the Sebasco Resort to attend a business retreat. I'm not usually a fan of resorts because of all the canned atmosphere and activities, but Sebasco felt different. I know that there is more to see I Maine, but I was rather confined to the area for a few days.
I stayed in the Early Bird Cottage (so named because it was originally built for the early bird golfers so they would not disturb other guests), which is one of the older buildings on the resort. The room is small, but all I needed was a place to sleep and shower, so it was not a problem. Two people in the room would be tight, especially if you're a bigger person (I'm 6' 2"). There is a sitting room at one end of the cottage, which can easily accommodate all the cottage residents. There is a TV and refrigerator in this room. There is also a deck with a table chairs overlooking the water. If the room feels small, go to the sitting room or the lobby of the main lodge.
My business meetings were held around the resort, and the entire facility feels cozy and inviting. The service was wonderful everywhere, except for one waiter in the Pilot House restaurant, who I will assume was just having a bad day. He was polite but curt.
I took a boat ride on the Ruth (powered sight-seeing boat) and the Magic (41-foot racing sloop). Both were enjoyable, and Captain Phil is a wonderful guide.
Be sure to go to the top of the lighthouse building (not a real lighthouse) for the view, both during the day and around sunset.
This was my first real trip to Maine, and the experience at Sebasco has me thinking about planning a vacation to Maine soon. (CS)

We visited Sebasco in late July with 2 twelve year olds and it was the family vacation we were hoping for. Although our kids decided they were too old for the kids club, they kept plenty busy with the pool, tennis, 3 hole golf course and the icing on the cake: candlepin bowling at the rec center! The nine hole golf course is very scenic and fun to play. Bring your deep woods bug spray.

The cruises on the Ruth and the Magic are really good and well worth it. Contra dance and lobsterbake on the lawn-we are still talking about it!

Food at the pilot house is fantastic! Try the boulaibasse. The shrimp and scallops are huge.

The staff is great. My husband tends to lose things, and when he lost his wallet on the golf course the groundskeeper found it and returned it to the front desk where it was put in the safe. We were contacted immediately. The pool staff was helpful when he lost his watch, too.

When one of our bicycles blew a tire the repair shop fixed it quickly and for free.

I could go on and on, but I will just say for a relaxing vacation with lots to do that will suit the whole family, go. If you can afford it, you will enjoy it.

My husband & I stayed at Sebasco July 16 - 23, 2006. I disagree with the Indiana member who wrote "Use Caution." We also stayed at the Lighthouse. The week we were there, the East Coast was under a heat wave with high temps & humidity. Fortunately, Sebasco faces the Bay & although the Lighthouse is not air-conditioned, there is a breeze that comes thru the windows making air-conditioning unnecessary. Sebasco Resorts does have units WITH air conditioning & if you need it, I suggest you reserve those air conditioning units early.
We were on the MAP plan. Without the MAP plan, there are very few restaurant choices nearby & its a 15 - 20 min. drive to Bath or Brunswick for restaurant choices. The food is excellent so the MAP plan is worth it.
As for activities, the resort could have additional activities. Their main focus is golf & boating. The boat trips are worth it. We don't golf so I can't write about that. We also took the historic tour of Phippsburg, which was wonderful. In addition to the activities, I suggest taking your car & spending time in Freeport, Bath & Brunswick - all within short driviting distances of the resort.
Overall, we had a wonderful vacation & would highly recommend staying at Sebasco Harbor Resort.

We have stayed at the Sebasco Harbor Resorts during the past 7 summers and wouldn't miss it. It's like coming home every year! The owner and staff all know our names and greet us warmly when we arrive, some with hugs. They are so nice to our two boys, whom they've watched grow up from toddlers.

We originally found Sebasco because we wanted to extend our vacation in New Hampshire and wanted a family-friendly place that would we could enjoy with our two active boys. My in-laws suggested Sebasco because they love to golf, having enjoyed Sebasco's scenic 9-hole golf course, but noticing how wonderful the resort was for families. We stayed 4 days that first year and have been extending our stay every year since. Last year we stayed almost 2 weeks!

We usually stay in our favorite room in the Main Lodge, a traditional Maine lodge built in the 1920's with big rooms and comfy furniture. We prefer a room with cross-breezes, but I won't divulge which one! We love the homey character of the lodge, with a large livingroom with fireplace, breezy screened-in porch with rocking chairs, and a game room with your choice of puzzles and games for a rainy day. I've spent many late nights working on puzzles while my children slept back in the room!

There is also a well-run camp for the young kids (and also one for the teens, I'm told) that our boys have both enjoyed. The counselors plan interesting activities, including golf lessons, nature walks, sports, and swimming every day. They also take the kids on field trips to nearby sights. While we were there, they climbed Mount Merritt. Other years they have explored local forts, dug for clams and sea glass, and gone to the beach. The camp day lasts from 9 to 4 and they feed them lunch. We feel comfortable enough to leave our boys in camp while we go off property for the day. Our kids would much rather go to camp than go shopping in Freeport with their parents (us too!). Sebasco is definitely the kind of safe environment where we feel our kids can roam free. My seven-year-old rides his bike all over the property on his own.

Did I mention the food? The MAP plan is the best value if you are going to stay in the resort for meals. For a family of 4 (two children under 12), we pay only $78 total per day for full breakfast and dinner. The breakfast is a buffet with a good variety of eggs, bacon and sausage, and either pancakes or french toast. There is also the famous Sunday blueberry pancake breakfast on the pool lawn. Dinner is usually served in either the Ledges Pub, for great burgers, sandwiches, or salads, or The Pilot House, which is more formal. The menu at the Pilot House is varied and excellent. We have enjoyed some wonderful meals there of fish, duck, steak and lobster, all on the MAP plan, and with the most beautiful view of the harbor. Get a table before sundown and you will see an unbelievable sunset from your table. Once a week, they also have a Maine lobster bake on the pool lawn, complete with corn on the cob, clam chowder, and blueberry cobbler. The dinner is also accompanied by a traditional Contra Dance music group, who teach the diners how to contra dance, which is a Maine version of square dancing.

There may be little room left for the other reasons why we love Sebasco, but I will list them anyway: the refreshing and therapeutic salt water pool, with a spectacular view of the harbor; the 9-hole golf course from which you get wonderful views of the cove and pond; the pond in which you can canoe or fish (my husband has caught some monsters in there); the perennial gardens which are always beautiful and well-kept; the exciting 4th of July fireworks which are viewed up close and personal on the golf course; the fun activities such as dinner theater (we saw an entertaining Elvis impersonator last year), band concerts, candlepin bowling and arcade (my kids' personal favorite), wine tasting and cooking demonstrations, ice cream shop/cafe, and fishing charters and cruises on "The Ruth." Don't miss the Pirate Cruise if you have little kids! You can do all of it or none of it, chosing instead to just sit and read by the pool (my personal favorite!).

I could go on and on singing the praises of Sebasco Harbor Resort, but you might think I've got stock in the place. There are many aspects I've not mentioned, but the one I need to close with is the most outstanding - the wonderful staff. Aside from Disneyworld, there are few places where the staff is so friendly and helpful. We have gotten to know many of the staff over the years such that they feel like family. And we are treated like family when we return every year. That and everything else keeps us coming back.
