“Good Food. Noise a Major Problem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

Went midweek and the food, as always, was enjoyable. Major issue, however, with a party of seven ladies whose noise level rose and rose to the point of becoming unbearable. Compounded by wooden floor. Staff in Thai Jantra are delightful - and an asset to the business - but did not have the gravitas or the command of language to calm things down. My wife spoke politely to the party and asked for consideration for others - which was not forthcoming. Joined in our complaint by another couple who had had a similar experience the previous week but decided to return on the basis that lightning does not strike twice - but it did! No one on duty or on call on the night with management/supervisory responsibility to resolve the problem. Wrote a factual letter to the designated Director of the business - no reponse received.

“Overpriced for bland food; website out of date”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 8, 2013

Have been to this restaurant a few times over the years - the quality has gradually gone downhill.

This time: the website advertised a 3-course meal deal for £16; Singha for £2.50, and house wine for £11. Actual prices on arrival: £17, £3.30 and £15 respectively. Not a dealbreaker, but doesn't give a great impression either...especially the drinks mark-up.

It was a very quiet night: only 3 tables occupied, including ours. I asked for my green curry to be a little hotter than medium, as in this restaurant it is normally geared to UK taste buds, i.e. not very hot. My partner prefers his 'not very hot', so ideal for him.

The starters were vegetable spring rolls and thai salmon cakes (tod man pla). The rolls were bought in, and both the dipping sauces seemed to be of much lower quality and tastiness than we have previously experienced in this restaurant - we suspect from a jar, too.

Real disappointment came with the main courses. We both had green curry. Mine had been made hotter simply by chucking a good handful of chopped red chillies into the green sauce. This meant that the chilli heat was very 'raw' and unpleasant. Good thai food should not taste like this: the heat ought to be there, but you should be able to taste layers of flavour through it. My partner was not impressed by his green curry either: some chopped vegetables, chunks of chicken, and sauce, mixed up and heated through, was his impression, though the chicken itself was nice enough.

Overall it gives the impression of a certain level of disdain for customers' tastebuds. It's a shame as good Thai food is a delight...and these people are Thai, so they ought to know that.

The location is lovely: in Boston spa, on the high street - plenty of parking nearby. The restaurant ambience is good, too.

Thank you for your feedback on your meal. We are sorry to hear that you went away disappointed. We try to ensure the highest standard with our food at all times and I can ensure you that our thai fishcakes and spring rolls are all made in our kitchen by our chefs. In Thailand if you want things hotter generally more chillies are added. We can appreciate that this may not be to everyones tastes but is the traditional way. Our dipping sauces are again made in house although the plum sauce can be effected by seasonality of the available plums. Thanks for bringing to our attention that the website is out of date and we will be rectifying the situation shortly. We have had to increase our prices due to the tax increase on alcohol and the general rising costs of raw materials, particularly rice.

“Great food”

Efficient service and excellent tasting food. The midweek 3 course special menu is particularly good value.

“Really good Thai - Enjoyable!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 22, 2013 via mobile

Went here with some friends and was a really pleasant evening. The waitress was happy to advise my friend on how spicy certain dishes were and was happy to make it extra spicy if required (my friend likes hot food). I'm less fussed for spicy hot food and I chose the king prawn with vegetables in oyster sauce and it was really tasty, I had a side of phad thai which was delicious. My friends both commented that their food was really good and the prawn crackers brought to the table whilst we looking through the menu was a nice touch. We had a bottle of wine and the meal came to under £20 each - great for a lovely evening catching up with friends and not breaking the bank. Worth noting though that this restaurant is in Boston Spa not Wetherby.

“Small and good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2013

If you're looking for the Thai Jantra in Wetherby you'll have a long walk as it's actually on the main street in Boston Spa. Parking is on the road outside which is fairly quiet (as is Boston Spa)or round the corner, so no probs there. At most you'll be 30 seconds walk away.

We've been here many times and both food and service is consistently excellent. It's a small venue, so it's not noisy, staff are attentive, and good to go as a couple or to meet with friends. The only thing to watch for is to try for a table away from the door as I think there's a takeaway service and there can be a draft as the door's opening and closing: it's not a big deal though.
