“The Inn was quaint, clean, relaxing AND had wonderful staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 24, 2010

This was a gamble and turned out to be a great place to stay. Impeccably clean, quiet,
reasonable price, wonderful staff who really cared about your stay and just one block from a pretty beach. Great location for exploring the area, other gorgeous beaches (including the cliff walk at Black Point) and only about 20 minutes from Portland which was a blast. No phones in room, quiet setting, TV downstairs, outdoor cafe. Food was good...a little expensive...but staff were accommodating if you wanted to take wine or food to your room...no problem. Located in a neighborhood but worked out well. I will go back.

My wife and I made plans to tour Cape Elizabeth and keep an eye out for places to stay without making reservations in advance, tricky during high tourist season but we were traveling mid-week and liked our chances. Higgins Beach Inn turned out to be one of our most favorite stops...ever. The Inn had old time charm and small but clean and well appointed rooms. It also is walking distance to a very large public, sand beach on the coast. The high point was our dining experience at the Inn; Domenic's Antipasto I believe was the name of the dish for two we tried and loved. Also, after dinner we retired to the porch for some relaxation and a glass of wine for dessert. When I asked the bartender to fill the glass a bit more and I'd pay the extra, she came back with a "happy birthday" from Bob who owns the place with his wife Diane. Tremendous evening. The next morning we loaded the car to find I had left some lights on and the battery was dead. No problem. Bob and some friends were working in the yard and had us started up in less than five minutes. I will go back again and heartily recommend Higgins Beach Inn to anyone looking to stay in the Cape Elizabeth area.

I recently spent an evening in the bar with friends and experienced the male owner's rudeness twice. Once he addressed his bartender as though she were his personal slave (Dude - the word "please" goes a long way, even when your tone is also unacceptable), just as she was taking customers' orders. His unpleasantness spewed forth a few more times in subtle ways, but he then rudely threw our group out of the bar at 10 pm. No, it doesn't usually close at that time. He just felt like going to bed. His demeanour was unpleasant and I would not recommend giving him business.

When employers treat staff this way in front of customers, it makes a person wonder what goes on behind the scenes. Having worked in the service industry myself, I have very little tolerance of or use for owners or managers who don't treat the staff well. I don't want to give them my business. I heard rumors around the beach (yes, it's a small community where everybody knows everybody else) that the staff is not treated well and that they hire foreigners whose English is perhaps not good enough to defend themselves.

A friend of mine also recently stayed at the hotel and told me that she found the female owner rude, as well.

On the bright side, the hotel dog, Cash, is really, really nice and sweet. Not rude at all.

If you have a choice of giving your business to these rude people or giving it to the Breakers, go for the Breakers.

Higgins Beach Inn was a trip back in time. Quaint inn within 1 block of the beach. Innkeepers were very helpful & friendly. Garafolo's Restaurant was closed on the evening we were there, but had breakfast there the next morning. Delicious blueberry pancakes and freshly baked raspberry muffins. This is definitely good value for the money.

We were extremely pleased with every phase of our daughter's wedding that included; planning with Bob and Diane, tent setup/arrangement, food/beverage service, beach ceremony and morning after buffet. The Inn was booked for wedding guests and to a person all were very pleased with their two day stay at the Higgins Beach Inn. A number of guests commented on the high quality of the food, the clean and comfortable rooms and the friendly, professional staff.

My husband and daughter and I have been staying at the HBI for the last 8 years--and we keep coming back for the charming atmostphere, lovely cozy rooms and fantastic food at Garofalos, the Inn restaurant!! The seafood aglio olio is amazing!!
The owners, Diane and Bob, are gracious and welcoming, always seeking to add to our experience at the Inn. We LOVE Higgins Beach and the smell of salt air as we sleep. From the time we rise to the smell of hot coffee offered in the lobby and the bluebarry pancakes for breakfast, to the delightful cocktails on the front porch, or in the cozy bar...to the wonderful dinners at Garofalo's..and then the restful sleep in the warmly decorated and cozy rooms...all is wonderful and special to us. There is something different at this Inn; it is like having the opportunity to be a part of a wonderful community who...simply stated, love the ocean, love the beach and love to share that with others. Thank you! Thank you!! Jay, Christine & Hailey Crossman

We have been going to this Inn for 10 years, both spring and summer.
The Inn is very well run, with a great staff from morning to evening.
Bob and Diane ( the owners) have always made our stay more than memorable.
This well maintained 100 year old country inn, is nicely situated, with an easy walk to
a beautiful beach.
Dining at the inn is always a wonderful experience, as new creations (inspired by
the owners cooking trips to Italy) are well executed by Chef Dan.
From the inn dog (Cash), (Bob and Diane), thank you for making our trips to Maine
most pleasant and look forward to many more.
